And yes, I know what they are up vote 2 down vote favorite 1 I am trying to migrate my Users files and Program Files from my C:\ Drive to my D:\ Drive. So far, I have http://superuser.com/questions/423819/how-can-i-move-ntuser-dat-and-the-similar-files-and-yes-i-know-what-they-are dragged all the files over, and replaced all the junctions, but I am still left with those three NTUSER.DAT files for the registry. I was wondering if it was possible, and also how I would go about moving these files over to my D drive? I am assuming that when I add the junction for "C:\Users", it will still work properly, but before I can test and see, I need to move them. I don't care whether I break anything. I have nothing on my computer, I just reinstalled today so I could take a shot at this migration. Would I be able to do it with a Linux LiveCD? I haven't tested this yet, but I'll go download one if someone thinks it's possible; I just have really slow bandwidth(126KB/s) so I'd rather know if that'd work first before I tried it. Also, a few more related questions: Does anyone know if the junction to D:\Users from C:\Users will actually work properly with the registry? Also, is there anything else I have to be careful for beside junctions, to make sure everything works identically, be

The rest http://www.grownupgeek.com/ntuser-dat-copying-error of message said "It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs using the file and try again." Have since googled the error message and found NTUSER.DAT is an essential registry item/file not to be http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/during-copy-get-ntuser-dat-in-use-error.2296417/ tampered with. How then can I successfully backup all my C: drive files? I need to send this laptop out for repair asap before any further problems occur on the PC and I lose my files which copy ntuser I am attempting to backup. Thanks so much. The easiest thing to do is instead of copying your entire "User" folder under Documents and Settings, only copy/backup cannot copy ntuser your "My documents" and maybe "desktop" folders, and any other photos like "my photos" - this will get a backup of only your data-files/folders without that NTUSER.DAT file. OR You could log-on as a different user with Administrator rights, then copy your entire User-folder for your other account - but this is more complicated. There is a lot of discussion about NTUSER.DAT in this post: NTUSER.DAT File Top quote reply Thu, 11/15/2012 - 7:10am #3 Anonymous Visitor Re: NTUSER.DAT "copying error" I am logged in as local administrator, and ntuser.dat keeps killing the copy anyway. You need to logon under Account #1 to copy Account #2's profile into Account #3's profile. That is, you need an arbitration account to copy accounts atop each other and where the arbitration account is not of those you are copying. You don't copy any of the arbitration account's files. You copy the files for the account(s) under which you are NOT logged in. You could use, for example, the Administrator account to copy your account's profile (My Documents is a path under %userprofile%). -- __________________________________________________ Post replies to the newsgroup - Share with others. Windows needs this file (badly) to load the user profile. Best leave this file alone. If you want to copy documents etc., just copy only the "my documents" folder and leave all other stuff in documents and settings alone. Windows needs a lot of these files, and it expects it to be where they were. (it is possible to change the location for the entire document and setting stuff, but you'll spend tons of time editing your registry).
