Here you can find an explanation of what exactly this file is intended for. Bottom line, your Java installation is somehow corrupted, so as a first resort to resolve this issue, I suggest you to re-install jre. You should ensure that you're installing the right jre for your architecture. Hope, this helps share|improve this answer answered Jan 29 '12 at 5:47 Mark Bramnik 6,31821125 add a comment| up vote 13 down vote Don't think if this is a correct way...(perhaps proper installation of Java is a permanent solution)....but this is a trick..:) Delete the “java.exe” file from “c:\windows” and “c:\windows\system32″. That should fix it. share|improve this answer answered Jan 29 '13 at 6:18 Abhishek Chatterjee 289312 If you instaled jdk and jre in separete packages and then deleted one of them - that trik will work –Yarh Mar 18 '14 at 6:09 what about javaws.exe ?, should I remove that ? –Francisco Corrales Morales Mar 23 '14 at 20:47 1 @Francisco Corrales: No need to remove javaws –Abhishek Chatterjee Mar 28 '14 at 10:40 It works for me, simply search for "Java" in "c:\windows" and delete every "java.exe", "javaw.exe", "javaws.exe" –pierrefevrier Mar 30 '15 at 14:05 add a comment| up vote 4 down vote You can not Uninstall/Reinstal
weeks back I updated my laptop to Windows 10 but after trying for one day, I reverted back to Windows 8.1. Everything was alright until I open Eclipse, which was throwing "Error: could not open 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg', as error could not open extension control file soon as I launch it. It was quite bizarre because everything was fine earlier.

I suspect Java installation problem, so I went to command prompt and typed Java, only to find the same error there

as well. You can see below, I am just trying to run the "java" command from MS-DOS window. Here "java" command is picked from PATH environment variable. $ java Error: could not open `C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg' http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9051103/java-path-error-of-jvm-cfg Then I checked my environment variables, JAVA_HOME and PATH and they all refer to C:\Program Files\Java. So this bit frustrating. After some time, I found that the default installation also copied java.exe, javaw.exe and javaws.exe to C:\Windows\System32 (i.e. uninstall of JRE didn't go well). I just removed them and voila, the error was gone. That annoying error is no longer popping. Error: could not open 'C:\Java\jre7\lib\i386\jvm.cfg' - Solution If you http://www.java67.com/2015/10/error-could-not-open-java-jmv-cfg-lib-eclipse.html are facing the same problem i.e. getting the Error: could not open 'C:\Java\jre7\lib\i386\jvm.cfg',then check your System32 folder and remove java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe if they exist there. Here are the exact steps to solve could not open 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg' error: 1) Go to C:\Windows\System32 2) Search for Java in that folder 3) Remove java.exe, javaws.exe and javaw.exe from this folder 4) Open command prompt 5) Type Java it should work Mind you, your error could be little different than mine depending upon whether your laptop is 32-bit or 64-bit. For example, if you are using 32-bit JVM then you can get something like Error: could not open 'C:\Java\jre7\lib\i386\jvm.cfg'. That's all about how to fix this error: could not open 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg'in Windows 8 and Windows 10. I have got this with theEclipse, but you can also see this with any other Java application e.g. NetBeans or Minecraft. I trying to use a java bat file for a minecraft server and recieving an error straight away could not "Error: could not open `C:\WINDOWS\jre\lib\amd64\jvm.cfg' " I downloaded a fresh new server and tried that and the same problem so it isn't my server. So I decided to look into Java itself, I uninstalled JDK and JRE and cleaned my registry free of them. Then went a head and reinstalled them. Exact problem, I tried to restarting, same problem. I tried going to could not open the folder of this jvm.cfg and the folder amd64 doesn't even exist in the lib folder. I just can't figure out what it going wrong. When I go into CMD and type Java I get the same error, when I type java -version, I get the same error. Minecraft itself works like a charm, and java still works on my browser. I really just can't figure it out. If anyone has help or knowledge on Java or this problem itself please please help me. I'm in dire need here haha. Thanks guys! Is that the default or did you direct it there? If you don't understand my response, don't ignore it, ask a question.
