In the last few days, updates stopped working. Currently, the could not Windows update service is stopped and will not start. It tries, but returns an error 1067. I have tried a number of KB fixes. The Eventvwr shows error x080080005 regarding the Update Server "Server execution failed." Nothing much else. SFC /SCANNOW reports no problems at all. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 outlines steps to potentially solve the problem, but has not solved it. Antivirus from MSE, MalwareBytes and Kaspersky have found no problems, although MSE is now a few days out of date, as I cannot could not start update it due to this problem. I looked for any recently installed programs that might be badly behaving, but nothing has been installed within the last 30 days. I did choose to uninstall some much older programs of questionable value (odd brand PDF print tools). The computer had a problem where it thought software was "currently being installed", when in fact none was, but the use of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 seems to allow forcing me to deletions and actually fixed the Programs and Features component to allow uninstalling software just fine. However, the Windows Update from the control panel or from the Action Center still does not work because the update service will not start (as stated at the top of this post). I tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 but in safemode, it does not work, again because the service will not start. I used search to start "Identify and Repair", but that did not find any problems to resolve. Suggested next steps? A guide? A utility? Thanks, I'm headed to sleep. It's been a long day and I'm tired of Microsoft.
