sure they get advertising revenue from it.] I've seen default 404 pages where the host sneaks in a few of their own ads, and that's kind of annoying. But there's still https://help.1and1.com/hosting-c37630/webspace-and-access-c85098/webfiles-c42846/create-custom-error-pages-a631149.html a message in there somewhere that tells the person they hit a bad link. This, though -- it looks like the domain is parked. Like the site doesn't exist at all. That's not good. I emailed customer support, and got this in reply: Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting us. The error pages that you see on that page is the 1and1 generic http://blog.robwhelan.com/2008/02/16/404-pages-on-11-webhosting-complaint-and-solution/ error pages, that's the reason why we give an option to our customers to let them customize error pages. If you are not satisfied with the error pages appearing on your site then I would suggets you create custom error pages. Anyone else with 1&1-hosted sites, have you tried it out? They say it's normal, but then again, this is first-level support who rarely read the question before responding (no, I didn't choose 1&1 for their customer support quality). Either way, it's another reminder of the importance of custom 404 pages. This just pushes it from "a good idea" to "essential" if you're having the same issue. Fortunately, custom error pages are very easy to set up. From the 1&1 FAQ (check with your own host for variations): How to create custom Error Pages Personally, I have 15 domains hosted in this account (various and sundry non-commercial mini-projects, including this blog), so I wanted a quick solution that I could use for all of them -- certainly not creating carefully-themed custom error pages for each domain with site maps, etc., since none of these are h

However recently I noticed that they had stopped working. When a 404 error occured, instead of redirecting to my error page I got an advert filled parking page. I re-checked their instructions for setting up the error pages on their FAQ and I was pretty custom 404 sure that I was setting the pages up correctly. After spending over an hour trying to figure out what was going wrong I stumbled on the ‘Empty Parking Pages' link on the Domain Overview in their Administration control panel. You can see the position of this link in the red box.On this page is the option to turn off their ‘Empty custom 404 error Parking Pages'. I turned this option off - it then took a few minutes for the change to be visible on my website.Part of the message says:When using this service, a page from our webserver will be displayed instead. Unless, of course, you have set up your own error message. Now instead of getting the advert filled parking page I got a plain:Error 404 - Not found Your browser can't find the document corresponding to the URL you typed in.It is better than before but it is still not my error message! It seemed the only way I could get correctly working error files is to create files with the following file names in your site's root directory - ‘error400.html', ‘error403.html', ‘error404.html' and ‘error500.html'. No entry in the .htaccess file is needed - 1&1 automatically picks these files up as your error pages. So why weren't the ErrorDocument lines in my .htaccess working? In my .htaccess file I also have the following line: AddType x-mapp-php4 .html .htmThis line allows PHP code to be processed from .htm and .html file

Discussion in 'Off Topic' started by dude, Jan 7, 2004. dude Diamond Member Joined: Oct 16, 1999 Messages: 3,192 Likes Received: 0 I have a page on 1and1 hosting service provider and have tried to change their 1and1 standard 404 page. I've tried dropping the file in and naming it "notfound.jpg" and "404.jpg" but it doesn't work. I look at the path of the page and added that directory "spicons" and dropped the images in there and it still doesn't work. Does anyone know where I would put the images or have a script to do this? Thanks! #1 dude, Jan 7, 2004 Encryptic Diamond Member Joined: May 21, 2003 Messages: 8,886 Likes Received: 0 Most hosting providers allow you to specify the path of your own 404 page. I'd just write a simple 404 page, insert your images into that, upload it and point the 404 requests to your page. #2 Encryptic, Jan 7, 2004 QueBert Lifer Joined: Jan 6, 2002 Messages: 21,279 Likes Received: 2 Originally posted by: dude I have a page on 1and1 hosting service provider and have tried to change their 1and1 standard 404 page. I spent an hour on my 1and1 shell trying to figure one out #3 QueBert, Jan 22, 2004 zuk Junior Member Joined: Jan 18, 2004 Messages: 13 Likes Received: 0 Umm... You do have access to .htaccess files, it's even AllowOverride All. ErrorDocument 404 is therefore possible. If you receive a problem with your custom error 404 page not being called when a script does not exist (like .php / .cgi...) and it only works for static html pages, just use this RewriteRule instead: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule (.*) /yourerrorfile.html You could also create a file named error404.html (or
