I have setup my web.config, and have all of my pages setup. When I run locally, and force errors (page iis custom error pages not found is the easy one), it all works well. But when I publish to my Windows Server 2008 R2 production server, and enter a bad page, it still takes me to the default IIS7 error page. Here is a sample from my web.config (and my pages are all there): Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us Stack Overflow Questions Jobs Documentation Tags Users Badges Ask Question x Dismiss Join the Stack httperrors substatuscode Overflow Community Stack Overflow is a community of 4.7 million programmers, just like you, helping each other. But would love to know more... –Sunny Mar 19 '10 at 19:51 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 61 down vote accepted Disclaimer: This is from my experience and not proven fact. Both are used to define error handling for a website, but different software refers to different config elements. customErrors are a legacy (backwards compatable) element, used by Visual Studio Development Server (aka. VSDS or Cassini). httpErrors are the new element which is only used by IIS7. This highlights the possible problem when developing ASP.NET websites while using VSDS instead of the local IIS. Also, refer to this post by myself about how to handle error messages with IIS7, if you wish to have full control of the error output. Summary: Developing in VSDS - use customErrors Publishing the site to IIS6 - use customErrors Publishing the site to IIS7 - use httpErrors. and if you develop with VSDS but publish to IIS7, then i guess u'll need both. share|improve this answer edited Feb 15 '13 at 16:33 Paul DelRe 3,21611322 answered Mar 19 '10 at 23: Start here for a quick overview of the site Help Center Detailed answers to any questions you might have http://serverfault.com/questions/266827/iis-7-0-404-custom-error-page-and-web-config Meta Discuss the workings and policies of this site About Us Learn more about Stack Overflow the company Business Learn more about hiring developers or posting ads with us http://www.somacon.com/p575.php Server Fault Questions Tags Users Badges Unanswered Ask Question _ Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. I have a domain running a .NET iis custom error proj with it's own error handling. I have a web.config running for the domain which contains: 7.5. It shows how to configure the customErrors and httpErrors sections for custom error messages on 404 and 500 server errors. Getting customErrors and httpErrors to work in IIS 7.5 can be tricky. The below settings worked for me. They handle both errors from static pages and ASP.Net pages. Instead of showing the default error pages, the settings below cause IIS to display user-friendly, static HTML pages to the user. If your customErrors are not working, try the web.config settings below. The 404 HTTP status code is for page not found error. The 500 HTTP status code is for internal server errors.
