Socket error = #0 Last Year GlobalSCAPE 5 CuteFTP for Windows THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO: CuteFTP® (all versions) SYMPTOM When trying to transfer files, an error appears: ERROR:> Can't read from data socket. Socket error = #0 Other (non-CuteFTP) symptoms include: Anti-virus software failed to update (cannot connect to server) Microsoft update fails Cannot run regedit or cmd Certain Google searches are redirected to other ad pages RESOLUTION The error is unrelated to CuteFTP, but appears to be a malware virus that prevents programs from using the data socket. To resolve this issue, you will need to edit the Windows Registry. Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk. It is a good practice to back up (export a copy of) the registry before you make any changes to it. For more information about editing the Windows Registry, refer to Knowledge Base article Q10411 - HOWTO: Windows Registry Settings. To resolve the issue: Search for the file regedit.exe or regedit32.exe (e.g., in C:\WINDOWS\system32) and make a copy of it on your desktop. Rename the copy whatever.exe. (The malware is actually monitoring files with specific names, preventing them from running. Renaming targeted files will prevent them from being "seen" by the malware.) Run whatever.exe to open the registry and search for the following registry key: HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/Drivers32/aux2 Delete this key! Restart the computer. I "think" my setup is 100% now, but I would like to check this.My cute ftp is now set to passive and it works fine. According to Daniel at Globalscape there is no known issues with linksys and ftp clients like Cuteftp. I have pasted his comments below in case you can infer something from them. Are you getting an error message after the list command is sent (time out or unable to connect to data socket)?If so the firewall part of the router may be blocking the data ports that the ftp protocol uses. To test this go into the router config and make your system the DMZ. Try to connect again. If you can pull a listing at that point then the firewall is too restrictive.FTP requires ports 20-21 open. If you are connecting to a secured site (ftp over ssl or ssh) then you will have to use PASV mode since the router will not be able to translate your internal ip to an external one (since its encrypted). If both you and the remote site are using aNAT router -and- a secured connection the connection will fail (our server has a provision for this, but more than likly your host would be using a standard unix ftp daemon).
