is the way to format a disk with cyclic redundancy error? Is there anyway to fix an external hard drive error for my gaming system without losing data? John RobertsonWritten 107w agoAs the saying goes Avodeji , with difficulty. The problem you describe is not uncommon. Sometimes it can be fixed and sometimes it can’t. It depends on the details. If you have another copy of the data on the external drive and a Broadband connection then my inclination would be to get rid of the external hard disk and to back up your files in the Cloud – probably Dropbox. There are various other effective Cloud systems. If you have another copy of the data but no Broadband then I’d get a new external drive. A single faulty sector on your present drive can cause the problem you describe. It shouldn’t but it can.If you have important data on the external drive and have no other copy then the solution is harder. There may not be a solution. I hope that is not the case for you. If you have a good local tech shop I’d get their help.

Based on my research, Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) is bit of mathematics used to ensure that your data is OK when being transfered. It's a checking procedure that quickly identifies when data has been damaged. If you get this mess

A client had them from a previous IT consultant that put in a 2008 SBS but the system backup never worked. I called Dell (We are resellers too) but they said the system wasn't supported with that OS... to make a long story short (too late?) after trying various SW tools and such we've cyclic redundancy check decided to just pull the HDDs out, re-format them and throw them in some ext. hdd enclosures.. to the problem- We can't wipe the drives. They won't initialize. I get a CRC error. I've tried HDDGURU's HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool but when it runs the task it states a format error - "Format Error occured at offset ###..##: 19 The media is write protected". Strange, I didn't realize an SATA HDD could be write protected in such a way. Thoughts on how to re-format and use these drives?
