When you are activeliy using a HDD, or manipulating files on it when you abruptly lose power, you may have corrupted the open file, or the file structure or partition of the HDD. To evaluate the HDD health, go to DiskMgmt and in the lower graphical section, list what it says in the Drive Status box, and in the Volume Status box just to the right. This will be your external removable HDD, listed possibly Disk1, or Disk 2 or 3 depending on how many fixed disks are on your Win-7 computer. Normally it should say Disk ?2, Basic, size_in_MB, Online. If it's a problem with the Disk organization, list those findings for us. How can I get past this and backup my data? The cyclic redundancy check, or "CRC" error, indicates a bad spot on your hard drive. The fact that you're seeing it when you try to copy a file indicates that the http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/270093-32-external-hard-drive-cyclic-redundancy-error bad spot may be within the file itself. We need to verify that and then we need to try to recovery your file and repair your hard drive. First, let's make sure that the problem is actually with the file you're copying since it's equally likely that the problem is with the location you're copying too. This is easy. Fire up a Command Prompt window, and then copy the file to NUL: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:>CD (to wherever the https://askleo.com/how_do_i_fix_a_cyclic_redundancy_check_error_when_i_try_to_copy_a_file/ file is located) C:wherever>copy Outlook.pst NUL 1 file(s) copied. This reads the entire file by copying it "nowhere". If this succeeds, the problem is not actually with the file itself, but the location you were trying to copy it to. My recommendation would be to copy it to a different disk entirely, or a different machine on your local network. If this copy fails, then we've confirmed that the bad sector on your hard disk is actually being used by some portion of your file. • Now that we've confirmed that the problem is in fact in the file itself, we need to make as best a copy of it as we can, somewhere else. This sets a position of "it can't get any worse than this". Some data within the file may be lost, but you'll have copied as much as possible before the recovery efforts. Once again, we want to copy the file to some different hard disk, or some other machine on your local network. And once again we need to do this within the command prompt: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:>CD (to wherever the file is located) C:wherever>xcopy /c Outlook.pst D: 1 file(s) copied. Two important things to note here: we've used the xcopy (for eXtended copy) command, and we've added the "/C" switch which keeps copying even if errors are encountered. As you've already experienced, the default behavior of both COPY and XCOPY is to stop if an error occurs. Now that we've got a "no

This process, however, rapidly went from merely an exercise in patience in waiting for something like 20 gigs worth of Stuff to copy and went into a painful and heinous exercise, as during the process my cyclic redundancy computer would suddenly pop up with something called a Cyclic Redundancy Error. Darling Slartibartfast (said laptop computer) would not explain just what a Cyclic Redundancy Error WAS, simply list a file and then STOP COPYING FILES. This led to me having to find the file, delete it, and begin again. Only to have it error on some other file.Rinse and repeat, until I was reduced to copying only ten or so files at a time of literally thousands of files (Exactly 8,497 error cyclic redundancy files, in fact.) and had to leave a large number of these (namely music files, stock images, and old photos) not backed up. If I had lost / damaged my laptop while in Japan, these would have been irrevocably lost. This. Is. A. Problem. A large portion of my life is on this laptop - backups of things from three computers ago, from when I was in middle school, rest entrapped deep within its hard drive. While of little actual value, these things are of incredible personal value and damn it, I want them to be SAFE. I do not have an external hard drive, though perhaps I should get one. A big one, since the one HD that I did get which was 60 gigs (I think? Or was it 40?) will not allow me to purge the files on it so I can re-use it to back up at least the My Documents folder (said 20 gig thing. Backing up my entire system? That's more than 60 gigs. No.) and is, in the end, a piece of shite. So what the hell is this Cyclic Redundancy Error and how do I get it to go away?Compy is a Gateway M680 laptop, about three years old now. If I try doing a chkdsk which has saved me from similar situations in the past, I get cyclic redundancy check errors. I have tried R-Studio to access and recover data to no avail. What can I do?
