A damaged disk likely means you cannot copy the file which is probably illegal anyway due to the EULA (End-user license agreement) and the disk would be missing some copy protection which means the game will not recognize the disk as authentic. Thus preventing the game from launching. Can't find your answer ? Ask ! After doing a full NTFS format, and during the installation process, an error http://superuser.com/questions/270181/winxp-install-error-data-error-cyclic-redundancy-check pops up saying: SXS.dll: Syntax error in manifest or policy file d:\i386\asms\10\MSFT\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man on line 4 Error: installation failed D:\i386\asms Error message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check) The CD has been used many times before without any issue. Any ideas if this is a disk issue, or hardware issue? Update: I've confirmed the disc works on another machine, so I will try replacing the CD-ROM drive in the PC in question. windows-xp installation share|improve this question edited Apr 15 '11 at 7:11 asked Apr 13 '11 at 3:32 Steve 1,01683473 I found this on an HDD. The user had issues, and whilst I was trying to recover files, I learned I could not access the user's document folder due to this error. I used Easy Disk Driver Repair and it claimed to have fenced off 5 broken sectors, but couldn't fetch the data. snapfiles.com/get/eddr.html –bgmCoder Jan 16 '15 at 3:08 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted Cyclic redundancy error specifically refers to errors encountered in reading from a disk or

Outlook started acting up, so http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?251329-RESOLVED-windows-xp-clean-install-failure as part of my attempts to fix it I tried to copy the PST to another location. The copy failed part way through with a cyclic redundancy check error. How can I get past this cyclic redundancy and backup my data? The cyclic redundancy check, or "CRC" error, indicates a bad spot on your hard drive. The fact that you're seeing it when you try to copy a file indicates that the bad spot may be within the file itself. We need to verify that and then we need to try to recovery your file and repair your hard drive. First, let's make sure that cyclic redundancy check the problem is actually with the file you're copying since it's equally likely that the problem is with the location you're copying too. This is easy. Fire up a Command Prompt window, and then copy the file to NUL: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:>CD (to wherever the file is located) C:wherever>copy Outlook.pst NUL 1 file(s) copied. This reads the entire file by copying it "nowhere". If this succeeds, the problem is not actually with the file itself, but the location you were trying to copy it to. My recommendation would be to copy it to a different disk entirely, or a different machine on your local network. If this copy fails, then we've confirmed that the bad sector on your hard disk is actually being used by some portion of your file. • Now that we've confirmed that the problem is in fact in the file itself, we need to make as best a copy of it as we can, somewhere else. This sets a position of "it can't get any worse than this". Some data within the file may be lost, but you'll have copied as much as possible before the recovery efforts. Dirty or scratched CD. Make sure it is clean, check for scratches. 2. Dirty CD drive. It there is dirt on the laser, you can have problems. There are drive cleaner CDs available. 3. Bad CD Drive. Try the CD in another drive. See if the contents can be copied to a folder on the hard drive. 4. Bad memory in the affected computer. You could create bootable CD with memory test software to check this.
