all the laptops I have tried to plug into the past 2 days to fix it. I am currently in Afghanistan, so my options are pretty limited, but I do have internet access. I would LOVE to get my movies back since, you know, I'm in Afghanistan, but I guess I would settle for an operational HD. Some help would really be appreciated. Probably the drive was removed from the computer whitout ejecting it properly. Were you able to test the drive with a different cable? It has vital back ups, files, movies, docs, etc. I was using the external HD on a Windows 8 laptop and accidentally pulled the USB cable out of the port while it was loading and changing the "Permissions for SYSTEM and Authenticated User" on a specific file on my external HD. When I plugged it back in the drive showed up on my computer as normal but would not open. After reading a few posts I went to the device manager deleted the drivers for the external HD then when I plugged it back in it updated the drivers and told me me my device is now working properly and ready to use and my drivers are up to date. But now it wont show up on my computer at all. I went into disk management and the Disk 1 had an icon with a picture of a HD with a red arrow facing down in a white circle. under Disk 1 it says: Unkown (empty line) Not Initialized I then right clicked and it said offline. When trying to get it back online it says: "The system cannot find the file

When I use the drive again, I got this cyclic redundancy error and windows suggest to format the drive. I can't do it now since I have many important cyclic redundancy files. I tried disk check but the drive is inaccessible (even in cmd prompt). Any suggestion please? More about : external hard drive cyclic redundancy error Reply to arlon almartin a b G Storage 12 June 2011 01:05:09 Did you boot to the command prompt with your win 7 disk or did you run it from windows? If you ran it from within cyclic redundancy check windows then boot to the command prompt and try CHKDSK before windows loads. Reply to almartin m 0 l John_VanKirk a c 106 G Storage 12 June 2011 02:03:18 Hello, Al's idea is great. If you can run chkdsk, add the /f switch to fix any bad sector errors. When you are activeliy using a HDD, or manipulating files on it when you abruptly lose power, you may have corrupted the open file, or the file structure or partition of the HDD. To evaluate the HDD health, go to DiskMgmt and in the lower graphical section, list what it says in the Drive Status box, and in the Volume Status box just to the right. This will be your external removable HDD, listed possibly Disk1, or Disk 2 or 3 depending on how many fixed disks are on your Win-7 computer. Normally it should say Disk ?2, Basic, size_in_MB, Online. If it's a problem with the Disk organization, list those findings for us. Instructable »ANSWERS : Technologysearch answers:Ask a QuestionDead external hard drive?I've been searching the internet for answers for the last couple of hours, but no solutions have helped me so far. The more I think about it, the more I'm sure that I have to either take it to an expert for data recovery, or if that isn't possible I'll have to accept the fact that the files are gone. So earlier today I was frapsing some PS4 content with the help of a Roxio video capture (PS4 signal blocked so I used Fraps to get around that). I've been saving the files on my C: drive, but since fraps files tend to get quite big, I changed the save destination to my external hard drive (Buffalo). Immediately after I ended the recording, my computer froze and I had to force shutdown. Upon restart, it started to repair damage to the disc (translated from Finnish), and once it was ready, it then proceeded to the system recovery menu. After at least 2 hours of trying all other options, I ended up choosing the option that resets my computer. Well that really wasn't the end of the world, since the most important files are on my Buffalo hard drive, but after the reset was complete, I couldn't access my external hard drive. I tried everything in Disk Management, at least what was suggested in similar issues, but nothing really changed anything. I can see my external hard drive in the Disk Management, but can't access it. When I try to initialize the disk, an error pops up that says: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", and it just shows that the disc is not initialized, and that it is unallocated. Is there any other option than either taking it to an expert for data recovery, or is that too late now? Thanks in advance.Follow QuestionFlag this comment as:Not NiceInappropriateSpamPreview Your CommentWe have a be nice comment policy. Please be positive and constructive.
