Expert: Michael replied10 years ago. You can actually do this from the cmd command prompt,, box,,, (START) - (RUN) - type cmd hit enter.....you are now in dos mode....first insert the floppy with the data.... and then type ' chkdsk a: /f 'this will repair the lost sectors on the disk,, and recover what data it can... I hope this helps, if not let me know....ThanksMichael FerrariProfessional Computer Tech / Electronics and Gadgets Ask Your Own Computer Question Customer: replied10 years ago. Reply to Michael's Post: Michael, This is what happens when I use that cmd: C:\>chkdsk a: /f The type of the file system is FAT. Windows is verifying files and folders... File and folder verification is complete. Windows has checked the file system and found no problem. 1,457,664 bytes total disk space. 1,435,136 bytes in 1 files. 22,528 bytes available on disk. 512 bytes in each allocation unit. 2,847 total allocation units on disk. 44 allocation units available on disk. it says it is OK but when i go to copy the file it shows 45 sec for complete transfer and hangs at 20sec and grinds and comes up with the crc error. They could try forcing the windows disk check. Try to boot in Safe Mode (usually with the F8 key), and select full disk check (scandisk). Check to see if the database has any recovery options for disk-errors. If they have a backup, it would be a good time to get it out now. share|improve this answer edited Aug 11 '09 at 10:02 answered Aug 11 '09 at 9:46 nik 43.8k674122 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote You could try using Spinrite (not free) SpinRite. It's a tool that will scrub your hard disk, bypassing all the built-in mechanisms to repair sectors on the disk. It can fix many a hard disk that would otherwise be toast because of a few bad sectors here and there, and will in most cases help recover files. share|improve this answer edited Aug 19 '11 at 5:15 8088 12.4k113554

(This is what I've been doing since my inactivity began. this was a shitstorm)THIS ONLY WORKS FOR 3.5" HIGH-DENSITY 1.44/2.88 MB FLOPPIES. ONE GOOD DISK IS REQUIRED.Step 1:Download MS-DOS 4.01 from WinWorld. Make sure you get WinImage if you don't have it.Open the SETUP image and write it to a good disk. (If it's not a 1.44M image, cyclic redundancy set it as such or writing will fail!)Make sure your computer can boot from a floppy, and boot... well... from the floppy.Step 2:When the SETUP screen appears, continue with whatever settings you want until the SELECT COPY screen appears. Insert the bad floppy. If "Defective Diskette" appears, hit Enter and follow instructions shown. (If it fails with this error, cold reboot with the INSTALL disk and try again. After 3 tries, the disk should be considered unfixable and canned. Sadly, cyclic redundancy check 75% of disks will end up like this.) After copying the disk (You will switch disks A LOT before it's done. Dammit, DOS 4.01!), reboot with the SELECT disk in. If a reboot works and no errors occur, boot back into whatever you normally use. Try to write the OPERATING image to the SELECT disk. (OPERATING is 720K, change it before writing, or be forced to start from Step 2! Saving the image again will help, as the change will be preserved.) If all goes well, it worked! Your disk has been revived. If not, try again from the beginning of this step from a cold boot.Repeat from Step 2 for each additional bad floppy.I revived 2 of 3 of my bad disks with this, which is MUCH better than typical results. Your mileage may vary. I like to examine and theorize about everything, from Amazon's impenetrable
ultravisor to autorun viruses (virii?) being technology's version of an STD (Slot Transmitted Disease). I dabble in Python 2.x and non-stereotypical BATCH (x>50 lines).
