Sharepoint Datasheet View Make Column Read Only

A diaglog box: "The selected cells are read only" appears when I try to paste. The cells are defined as "multiple lines of text" with up to 15 lines. The largest thing I'm attempting to paste is 200 words, 1140 bytes. The average byte count is around 825 bytes. I am able to paste, edit, delete and copy from all the other cells in http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/41908/why-are-fields-in-datasheet-view-read-only the table, so I'm pretty confident that my Datasheet View & permissions are set up appropriately. Three of the columns are inherited from my parent site and were created last week, one is defined on the site with which I'm working and was created this morning. I don't think that the logical location of the fields is making a difference. The only consistency between the three is that they're all long-form text fields. In doing my research, I discovered this question on stack which states that "It will come up saying "The selected cells are read only" if you have a multiple lines of text field that is anything other than "Plain Text" (Such as the body section of a blog post), as Datasheet view has no idea how to deal with HTML etc." I'm importing from a semi-colon delimited text file, and viewing it in a hex editor doe not reveal any hidden control characters. I've checked my datasheet, site and column properties, and cannot see anything that would force these fields into a read-only status. Anyone ever run into this before? Anyone know of some other things to check? sharepoint-foundation import datasheet share|improve this question edited Jul 26 '12 at 14:28 asked Jul 26 '12 at 13:49 dwwilson66 50031633 The 15 lines just affects the size of the input area on the form, it does
Bob Date: Jul 27 Category: Sharepoint Views: 33856I have a quick question for you all. Does anyone know why when I have a list open in Datasheet view it is read only? There are a number of changes that need to be made to some of the records in the list and it would be way easier to just http://www.go4sharepoint.com/Forum/read-datasheet-view-4100.aspx edit and make the changes in the datasheet view. It is really odd, because if you http://charlesemes.blogspot.com/2009/05/sharepoint-datasheet-view-error.html open a list and then choose the approve/reject view and then view the approve/reject in datasheet view it works fine and is not read only. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a setting that needs to be changed? Share: 6 Answers Found Answer #1Answered By: Donta Kirkland Answered On: Jul 27Are you a local administrator on the sharepoint box? If not what is your permissions datasheet view level? Sometimes this behavior can be caused by permissions level. There are anumber of other reasons why you could be experiencing this kind of behavior as well. Something such as a free form text fields, attachments, or calculated fields sometimes cause this. I am sure someone might be able to pinpoint your problem better than I can. Maybe a screen shot or alist of the different data types that show up in the all itemsview that you are trying to edit. Another thing you sharepoint datasheet view could try is export to excel spread sheet update a few items and then use the sync command button the list toolbar to sync the data back to sharepoint with your local changes. If thisworks for you fixes your error you could do them all that way. This way you don't time out on the webpart page making changes and lose a bunch of data.Answer #2Answered By: Cade Velazquez Answered On: Jul 27Anotherquestion in addition to your permission level: When youopen indatasheet view, do you get any messages that tell you that somerequired fields are not shown in that view? That will also put the viewintoread only mode. The bestview to use as adatasheet view is AllItems.aspx as long asall custom columns have been added to the view.Answer #3Answered By: Ariana Christensen Answered On: Jul 27I’ve been having the same problem. I DON’T think that I have all required fields in the view, but I don’t get any messages. I will try that !Answer #4Answered By: Darrius Whitfield Answered On: Jul 27Is "Content Approval Required" set to "Yes" for this list?Unfortunately, the only way I found to get around this was to set itto "No" while Imade the necessary changes in the Datasheet View.Hope this helps. Let me know if you found a different way to solvethis issue.Answer #5Answered By: Trevor Davis Answered On: Mar 19I have a similar problem. I created a "form library" through InfoPath. After data is loaded via InfoPath to the table, I export thedatasheet tab
a few posts that indicated that not all of a lists data types are supported in datasheet view, but that wasn't my problem because I only had single line text, number and currency data types. The problem was that I needed folders in my list and although I could edit the datasheet at the root level, I got the read-only error whenever I tried to edit the datasheet within a folder. On one of my VPC images I had no problems and then I spotted the little Access icon in the top left hand corner of the datasheet. Comparing this to the VPC image where I was getting the error I noticed that the Access icon was missing. On this VPC Office 2007 was installed EXCEPT for Access. SoI just installed Access and the error went away. Please note that the datasheet view does require the Office Web Components to be installed on the CLIENTS for datasheet view to work at all. What I haven't checked yet is whether clients needs Access 2007 in order to edit cells when in a folder of a list. When I find out I'll update this post. HiMy problem was duw to multiline text box. i.e.Enhanced rich text (Rich text with pictures, tables, and hyperlinks) When I changed this to Rich text (Bold, italics, text alignment) it started working.Regards,Neeraj January 27, 2010 at 5:02 AM Yogesh Ghare said... Brilliant!I had Access installed, but I had not opened it beffore so it needed to do some extra configurating. After ininializing Access and re-opening the browser session I was able to enter datata in the Title field which was previously locked. Thanks! My ADMIN account has Full Control permissions and the datasheet works fine.A normal user has Full Control inside a folder and the datasheet view doesn't work. Turns out the users need basic list permissions (I created a new permissions level) set at list
