error message and discovered there is a limitation for Excel files of 218 characters – this is the path length limitation whether it's a URL or a file share path. If you try to open an Excel file with more than 218 characters in the path and filename, you receive the following error: A DDE error has occurred, and a description of the error cannot be dde error in excel displayed because it is too long. If the filename or path is long, try renaming the file or copying it to a different folder. The Microsoft article for this issue is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/271513. The solution is to shorten the file path or URL by storing files at the top level (rather than "nesting" files under several folder levels).
