on: November 19, 2004, 04:20:54 PM » A decompression bomb is a file that unpacks to an enormous amount of data - thus "flooding" the unpacking engine. It's quite hard to detect such files reliably, so it's possible that it gives some false alarms ocassionally. So 4.5's new ability to at least try to detect such bombs is certainly a welcome addition. Logged Intel Atom D2700, 2 gig

Found that when I scanned my internal E: partition, Avast would just close. I suspect it's doing this when it encounters some files included in UBCD4Win that other scanners classify as "Riskware" [could be used maliciously or not]. 3. Decided to scan individual folder to home in on the cause of the problem. Whilst scanning /mnt/sda6/Bootable Disks/CD's/Linux various problems [14] were reported for files within various Linux ISO's. 4. I don't know what a "Decompression bomb" is, so don't know whether I should be concerned or not. Anyone know about this? Any clue why Avast should close down when scanning? Probably nothing to worry about if these are Linux files or disk images. I'd hazard a guess that one of the reasons Avast is closing down is that its decompression engine is croaking, looking at the number of 'decompression bombs' your getting.
