I am not sure how far the direcroty goes, but I have counted to at least 26 directories deep. I cannot delete the parent folder in either explorer, or from the prompt. At the prompt I have tried RD foldername and it says, "Folder not empty". Tried del foldername\*.* with no error and still cannot delete it. Any suggestions? h05t1l3, Apr 16, 2005 #1 Sponsor Saga Lout Joined: Sep 15, 2004 Messages: 3,791 Probably a silly question but have you tried deleting individual sub-folders? Saga Lout, Apr 16, 2005 #2 WhitPhil Gone but never forgotten Trusted Advisor Joined: Oct 4, 2000 Messages: 8,684 Have you tried RD /S {foldername} (assuming the /S parameter is legit on Win2K) WhitPhil, Apr 16, 2005 #3 h05t1l3 Thread Starter Joined: Apr 16, 2005 Messages: 3 Yes, I haved tried deleting individual folders and got the same error. I tried RD /S foldername and it said, "Maximum Path Length Exceeded". Any other suggestions? P.s. Thanks for the quick replies. h05t1l3, Apr 16, 2005 #4 moper Joined: Feb 14, 2004 Messages: 1,657 See if you can move the folder to the C drive. (or D, or what ever partition it happens to be on. That may eliminate enough letters in the path to delete it. moper moper, Apr 17, 2005 #5 millimmy Joined: Apr 20, 2005 Messages: 1 moper said: See if you can move the folder to the C drive. I had the same problem with a directory structure being too deep. Oddly enough moving the top folder to my root C:\ drive worked so that I could delete it with no problems. How crazy is that. Thanks for the help. millimmy, Apr 20, 2005 #6 h05t1l3 Thread Starter Joined: Apr 16, 2005 Messages: 3 I have tried to move it from its loaction to C: partition with the following error. I have a client who is running Windows 2000 Server. On a data partition, he has a folder named "Backup S" https://forums.techguy.org/threads/cannot-delete-file-file-system-error-1148-win2k.353515/ which, when opened, appears to contain itself, and opening the second folder shows the same folder inside it, and so forth. If I try to delete the folder, I get the message "Cannot delete file: File system error (1148). Because this is a data partition, I can make a backup copy of all folders except this one, then reformat the drive, and then restore the backed up data. Before I do this, is there http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/149783-How-to-delete-folder-that-contains-itself anything else I can try to get rid of this one problem folder? Thanks in advance. In any event, I would try the kill-or-cure CHKDSK x: /F /V /R (replace x with the appropriate partition letter) in a Command Prompt window, which might sort out the file system errors. (Probably wise to attempt a backup before you run it!) If that doesn't work I would try UNLOCKER, selecting the top-level directory you wish to try deleting, then select Delete from the drop-down menu. Beware that it can take an amazingly long time to do anything, doing which time there is no obvious sign of activity (inless you look in Task Manager). Good luck! BATcher Time prevents everything happening all at once... Reply With Quote « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Lounge Windows Older Windows versions Forum How to delete folder that contains itself? error. It happened when I tried copying an entire volume for one hard disk to a similar volume on another hard disk. Both disks Seagate SATA formattet with Win2kSp4/NTFS. http://www.velocityreviews.com/threads/file-system-error-1148.504297/ I could however make the complete copy if I took only a number of folders at a time. It is not much of a problem.
