on Aug 2, 2007 Recently we encountered a bad directsound driver error while trying to play some MP3s in Winamp. We looked around the web for a simple fix to the problem and there is not much information about this error so we decided to share how we were able to fix the problem on our computer. We also have some other things you can try if our particular fix does not work for you. The Problem You are able to open Winamp fine but as soon as you try to play an MP3 or other audio file you get the following message: "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078 or 8878000A" The Solution The way that we were able to fix the problem was by rolling our sound card driver back to the previous version and then we installed the latest driver for the sound card. Here are some detailed steps you can follow: Roll the driver back to it's previous version (only tested with Windows XP) Right-click on 'My Computer' and choose 'Properties' Click the 'Hardware' tab Click on 'Device Manager' Find 'Sound, video and game controllers' and click the plus sign next to it to expand it Find your sound card and double-click it, this will bring up it's Properties Click the 'Driver' tab Click on the 'Roll Back Driver' button. If there is a driver backed up for your device it will roll back to that driver, otherwise a message tells you that 'No driver files have been backed up for this device'. If there is not a backed up driver for your sound card you may want to just click the 'Uninstall' button to completely remove the current driver that is giving you problems. Install the latest driver from your sound card manufacturer's website Find the manufacturers website and look for a drivers/downloads area Download the most recent driver available fo
