Unless you are dealing with ancient versions of Windows (i.e. Windows 9x / ME), the main way to know what DirectX is available is based on the OS version. This is best done as a "you must be this high to ride this ride" style check. I cover how to do this in this blog post which should be done in an installer and not by an application. For Direct3D 11 there's some complexity here if you want to support Windows Vista. This is covered in great detail by the Direct3D 11 Deployment for Game Developers article and Direct3D 11 Install Helper sample. Once the application starts, the best way

our latest game for PC. Has anyone had any experience checking DirectX versions from NSIS? I am planning on creating a http://forums.winamp.com/archive/index.php/t-134762.html dll to do the job because of the need to call a https://groups.google.com/d/topic/microsoft.public.vc.mfc/cvVSfSrb3q0 couple of functions inside the dsetup.dll redist. If anyone has done this before let me know, it would save me some time Thanks Stu Joost Verburg8th May 2003, 19:00It's stored in a registry key: HKLM, SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX, Version Stuart Middleto8th May 2003, 19:18Thanks Joost, Do you know directx setup from what version it was set in the Reg? I suppose if its not there I can run DX81 setup anyway, wont hurt :) Thanks kichik8th May 2003, 19:28You can call DirectXSetupGetVersion using System.dll: System::Alloc 4 Pop $0 System::Alloc 4 Pop $1 System::Call "dsetup::DirectXSetupGetVersion(i, i) i (r0, r1) .r2" IntCmp $2 0 error System::Call "*$0(&i4 .r2)" System::Call "*$1(&i4 .r3)" directx setup error DetailPrint "$2.$3" Goto done error: MessageBox MB_OK "can't get dx version" done: System::Free $0 System::Free $1 I have not tested this because I don't have DirectX SDK, nor DSetup.dll, but it should work if the documentation is right. kichik8th May 2003, 19:32Just got DX9 redist and it works. You'll have to parse the numbers a bit with IntOp but that shouldn't be too hard. DOCa Cola9th May 2003, 05:30hm, nice, how to get the direct setup to run with the DirectXSetup function and return a value?
