It's owned by a teenager so the chances of it having been maintained are probably next to zero.Recently it stopped booting and returns the error: Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete. That 'hour' has extended to about 12 and still no sign of a repair. Something I read somewhere suggested this error relates to bad sectors on the disk.I have legit Win 8 discs but these are not recognised so I'm assuming this is because it doesn't know to look in the disc drive. It proceeds with the error and will not even load in safe mode. We don't have a win 8 recovery disc either and since we're all students, no money to afford someone to look at it. So we are hoping to find some type of fix we can do ourselves. The only other operating system we have is now Win 10 on another laptop.I would be really grateful if anyone could help as the owner of the laptop needs it for study. Technical expertise is not high so I would need instructions in nice plain English please!Thank you kindly in advance,Alicia Drea likes this
 Yuri 174 Administrator Community OwnerMicrosoft MVP 174 585 posts L

I'm trying to repair a crashed Win 7 computer. I booted off the installation disc and ask it to do a repair. Currently it's "Attempting repairs... Repairing disk errors..." It says this may take over an hour and it's been doing this for just over two hours (blue bars running across the screen). How long should I give it before throwing http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/109985-how-long-repair-disk-errors.html in the towel? Thanks. There are timeouts built into Repair so that it can't take forever - it will throw up a fail message in that case. I would wait. If I absolutely had to bail out I would immediately boot the HD maker's full diag/repair CD scan to see if repairing surface errors can get the Disk Check test to complete correctly afterward. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Because Startup Repair conducts dozens of tests and repairs it may have others to run before the job is finished, as well. So if the process is stuck (and it started by itself) then that means Windows has a serious issue somewhere. When did this first begin? Did you notice any strange behavior before this started? m 0 l disk error Kriztal February 11, 2016 10:09:12 PM thejackal85 said:Do you understand what repairing disk errors does?
