Another series of disk checks from the CD didn't come up with anything. After rebooting to Windows, the disk was just fine.Any idea what might be causing something like this? The disk is less than a year old and I doubt XP can find errors with it that Western Digital cannot. Thanks in advance for any hints. norton_I Ars Praefectus Registered: Apr 30, 2001Posts: 3785 Posted: Tue Dec 18, 2007 4:02 am Paging may also mean demand loading of executables or dlls.chkdsk normally only checks filesystem layout, but I would expect the WD utilities to notice any genuine error. Did you run a complete surface scan with at least one of those utilities?Checked SMART status?Have you checked your cables? A loose or faulty cable could explain why the disk tools didn't pick up the errors, and why the whole drive disappeared.Do you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard? It could be a buggy driver, and the demand paging path may exercise the drive in a d

How do I track down what is causing the problem? The problem device is an external WD My Book 1 TB IEEE 1394 SBP2. I don't understand why there should be a paging operation on this device as it is used only as an external backup for the C: drive. It has been set up with no paging file. NEW Info: I setup WD My Book drive to have a virtual paging file and guess what - The error messages stopped! Go figure! If you need more information just point me in the right direction and I will post it.
