All Replies Posted by osprey4 on 25 Sep 2013 17:00 Hi Sakuraholic, First, please make sure you've got your data backed up and your system restore discs created!!! Second, I see you have a Western Digital hard drive. My suggestion is to go to the WDC site and download their Data Lifeguard diagnostic for DOS. Use the download to create a bootable diagnostics CD, then boot to that and run the diagnostics on your drive. That's the best indicator of the drive's health. In the meantime, you should call Dell tech support, since there's a good chance the drive needs to be replaced. Please post back and let me know if you need more help. Hard disk cable and connection issues According the text description, numerous data http://www.hdsentinel.com/hard_disk_case_communication_error.php transfer (communication) problems found. In most cases this is not really related to the hard disk, but related to the connections and/or data cables. For example loose SATA cable connections frequently cause this issue. It is recommended to verify both the power and the data cable connected to the hard drive. If you see the plugs do not fit properly, you should change the data cable to a different one, for example a SATA cable with a metal clip to fix the connection: The error counter counts all errors found during the lifetime of the hard disk. It means that the errors do not reset automatically after fixing or replacing the cables. So if things will be improved, the error-counter will not increase further (the current amount of errors remain reported). If the problems are corrected, it is possible to manually reset the error counter in Hard Disk Sentinel: open the S.M.A.R.T. page of the hard disk drive locate the #199 Ultra ATA CRC error count attribute locate the Offset column for this attribute and click on the 0 between - and + and enter the error count value reported in the text description

Yesterday, I installed one of the 2 port SATA cards recommended by Raj. I did not boot the server after installing the card.Today I received my last two WD20EARS and installed them. Before installing the 2 port SATA card, I was able to boot the server with the five hard drives without issue and run one preclear cycle. Now when I boot with all seven drives installed, I get an error after the BIOS initializes the controller cards that states:BMC RespondingSATA 1 Hard Disk ErrorPress F1 to ResumeIf I press F1 it will boot into unRAID, but not see the drive. The drive in question does have the power LED lit, but no activity.I already opened the case up and checked all of the connections. I applied slight pressure to ensure they were fully seated. When I move the drive from the top row of the RPC-4224 (I have the top row connected directly to my motherboard), the system will boot without issue into unRAID.Is it possible to have just one slot of the hard drive trays on the RPC-4224 fail? Could just one of the four breakout cables go bad all of the sudden?Any other suggestions? « Last Edit: May 31, 2011, 09:00:03 AM by cobra281 » Logged cobra281 Member Posts: 51 Re: Sata 1 Hard Disk Error « Reply #1 on: May 25, 2011, 04:09:38 PM » Also, I am getting an error that states:ata7.00: SRST failed (errno=-16)ata7.00: failed to IDENTIFY (INIT_DEV_PARAMS failed, err_mask=0x80)ata7.00: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0It repeats these a few times and then goes ahead and boots.
