get some of them to boot. The one I'm working with right now, and having issue with is: 1.Part of a hardware mirror (just using one of the disks to make a vhd). 2. Windows 7 3. It was running just fine as a physical machine, but slow. 4. The data drive is in tact, and I'm able to access it just fine, but not the "System Reserved" partition, it keeps asking for format it when I mount virtualbox a disk read error occurred the vhd file. I tested a working machine and I'm able to access the system reserved partition if I assign it a drive letter, but not from this vhd. 5. I did have to delete the pagefile, restore folder, and hiberfile, (in order to be able to shrink it) but these should not be required to boot. They should just be remade, right? Since in this case I was replacing the HD's I could just pop them back in and change the system restore settings, and what not, then remake my vhd, if my assumption in 5 is wrong, but I have some other backups that are in a similar situation where I made a vhd then reformatted on the same drive, but I still need to shrink them, which means getting rid of some system files that can't simply be moved. I used disk2vhd and vhd resizer to create the vhd and resize respectively. When I resized the VHD file (and the embedded partition), and tried booting, I got: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart Some notes: FixBoot and FixMBR don't help. ChkDsk doesn't help. The partition is indeed active. The partition starts at sector 63 (it also did so before the problem) of cylinder 1, head 1, and is marked as type 0x07 (NTFS) My host OS reads the VHD and the partition completely fine I'm interested in knowing http://superuser.com/questions/407087/what-causes-a-disk-read-error-occurred-press-ctrl-alt-del-to-restart the cause rather than the fix. So "re-format the disk", "reinstall Windows", etc. aren't valid solutions. It's a virtual machine after all... I have nothing to lose, so I don't care about fixing it. I just want to know what's causing this problem, in case I run into it again on a physical machine (which I have done before). More info: I made a sample VHD file illustrating (almost) the same problem which you can download here. To reproduce the problem: Download the file (it's highly compressed, be careful!), and try booting it in VirtualBox (or some other VM). Notice that you'll be told "Error loading operating system". (While the error is different, it's the same issue.) Now try mounting the VHD in Windows's Disk Management, and running BootSect.exe /NT60 X: /MBR, where X: is the drive letter of the mounted volume. (The location of the tool is likely to be C:\boot\bootsect.exe, but if it's not there on your system, then you'll need to find it somewhere else...) Now un-mount it, and try booting. The boot should now proceed correctly. (Although it won't find Hal.dll, at least you know it's working.) Now do the same thing as the last step, but use /NT52 instead of /NT60. You will now be greeted with the first error -- indicating that the Windows XP loader doesn't like the disk. If you have crossed one of the following boundaries - 528Mb, 1Gb, 2Gb, 4Gb you are now in trouble!!!! When you start your new resized Virtual Machine you get the message: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Now its time to install Bart's Preinstalled Environment and find your XP-cd. Also download the Testdisk Utility and unzip it. Run PE Builder (Bart's Preinstalled Environment) Source: (path to Windows installation files) D:\ is my CD-Drive Custom (include files and folders from this directory) is where I unzipped the Testdisk Utility I choose to create ISO image Press the Build-button Now start your new expanded Virtual Machine you just created You get this message: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart In the top of the Virtual Machine screen choose the CD: Capture the ISO image you just created with PE Builder.
