As a first measure I would run a chkdsk c: /r in cmd - e.g. from an installations disc. That would be as easy as it comes. Windows 7: "A disk read error occurred" After installing XP 29 Dec 2011 #1 moozery Windows 7 http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/disk-read-error-on-startup-windows-xp/199100.html Ultimate x32 5 posts "A disk read error occurred" After installing XP Hello About 3 hours ago I installed Windows XP x86 on an empty partition. Before the install my partitions were like this: C: Windows7 D: disk read Empty NTFS Partition E: Backups Partition I've installed XP many times before and I've never had this happen, but when the install finished, suddenly my Backups was C and my Windows 7 partition was E, making Windows 7 refuse to start. I tried to go into XP and switch them back to their original letters using "Computer Management" or something similar under "Administrative Tools", and to do that I had to make the Windows 7 one "active" disk read error and switch the letters, but it still wouldn't start. The Windows 7 install disk will sometimes detect something is wrong, but it's tried to repair it 3 or 4 times now and still the same thing: "A disk read error occurred, press Ctrl Alt Del to restart". Would anyone be able to help me out? I recently formatted the hard drive and performed a clean install. It was working fine for about a month. Then I tried to connect the S-video port in the back to my tv. The computer said that it installed hardware after connecting the cable, but it needed to restart for it to function correctly. So I restarted and it loaded the BIOS and went to a black screen that said cannot read disc press ctrl+alt+del to restart. I press those, it restarts, loads BIOS, then back to the same screen. I removed the battery and removed the hard drive and reseated it. Still the same error. I tried booting from my Dell Windows XP disc that came with the laptop, but when I get to the screen that says press any key to boot from disc, i hear the disc spinning and then it says checking configuration, then just a black screen. I've waited 10 minutes and nothing happens. So here I am Hoping that there is some hope for it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I ordered and external enclosure from Newegg, hooked it up to my desktop, and formatted from there. Put it back in the laptop and its good as new. I made sure to partition the hard drive upon installation of XP Home. Thank you everyone for the suggestions and quick responses.
