Dell Inspiron gateway disk read error occurred laptop won't boot: "Disk read error has occurred" I'd be so grateful if anyone can rescue me...or at least point me in the right direction. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (about a year old) which has worked fine
Toshiba Disk Read Error Occurred
for the past year apart from occasionally freezing up during McAfee scans. Yesterday it shut itself down after a Windows update...and since then, I haven't been able to get it to boot. I just get a black screen and the same error message over and over again: "A disk read error has occurred. Press Ctrl, Alt, Del to restart". Every time I do so, the same message comes up again. I can't get any further than this screen. It won't go in to Safe mode. The only thing that gets any response is pressing F2 and F12 which brings up the Setup page and lets me select the CD drive to boot from. But when I tried to boot from the Recovery CD that came with the laptop, I can't get anywhere. I managed to see the C drive and the D partition, but I can't actually do anything with them. I've gone into the Diagnostics and got it to do all the tests, but again I got nowhere. Is there anything at all I could try to get it to boot? If the hard drive is dead, is there any way of at least rescuing all my files from it before replacing it with a new one? Huge thanks in advance for any advice offered. Any help would be very gratefully received...I'm tearing my hair out! cathrin View Public Profile Find More Posts by cathrin Please sign in or register to remove this advertisement. 24-03-2010, 13:14 #2 max99 Forum Member Join Date: Jun 2005 Posts: 8,817 This is exactly why you're supposed to make backups. What exactly happens when you try to boot and when you tried the recovery disk? You

In the bios, make certain the HDD is enabled (via the space bar) as well as the first boot device. If you are installing vista, you will have to set the boot device to your dvd drive first, and enable it also. Then, when booting off the dvd, press the key when it says "press any key to boot from dvd..." and run setup from there. The fourth screen or so should show your hard drives and any partions they contain. You will need about 10 free GB'S to install. If there are no drives listed, then yours are sata- enabled, not IDE, and you will need to locate and load additional drivers for them, which can be found at the "load drivers from".. screen that comes next by clicking on the "have disk option", and typing in (without the quotation marks) " d:\ " (if d:\ is your dvd drive, it could be E:\ or even F:\ depending on how your laptop is set up and how many drives you have...) then pressing enter. Be sure not to press any key afterwards when vista is restarting your computer for the second part of setup, and be certain you h

Follow the steps listed below to launch the hard drive custom test:- Power off the laptop (Ensure that AC Adapter cable is plugged in)- Power on the laptop and repeatedly tap
