She has had the computer a few years and uses it only on rare occasion to access the internet for checking email and facebook. Occasionally she will use Microsoft Word, but that is the extent of the usage of the computer. The computer was working fine the last time she checked her email (a month or so ago). She recently pushed the power button to turn the computer on and now it will not boot up. She bought the computer new and for whatever reason it did not come with a recovery CD of any kind. She also has no book or documentation. The only information I have is what is written on the outside of the computer: Dell Inspiron 530S Windows XP Home Edition Intel Pentium Dua

Hi When I try and start up my Windows XP I get this message "Disk read error occurred press Ctl+Alt =Del to restart. Every time I restart I get the same message. Does anyone have any disk read ideas about the steps I should take in an attempt to fix this problem. I have searched the forums but am a bit lost about some of the suggestions. Hi Found the original Windows XP installation disk, turned the PC on, inserted the CD a number of times but all I get is the same message "Disk read error occurred press Ctl+Alt =Del to restart" Tried rebooting, installing CD, but only get the same message. On switching it on this morning, I get the error message: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart" If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, it just returns to the same screen. Also, when my PC first starts up a get a blue Intel pentium screen, which never appeared before. It will not boot into Windows. I tried setting the boot drive to the DVD drive in the BIOS and booting from my Vista DVD, but after the message "press any key to boot from CD", I just get the same error message. Any ideas how to help ? I have data I need to salvage from the HD. My old c: is 2 discs connected in RAID. This is addressed on IDE ATA drives, not SATA drives. For those of you having this problem, Here's your answer: Make sure that the black jumper in the back of your main hard drive is set to "MA" (MASTER) as abbreviated according to the schematics shown on top of your hard drive. (On the sticker at the bottom.) Any other drives that you have such as your CD-ROM, DVD-ROM must be placed as "SL" (SLAVE) as abbreviated on the back of them. (These abbriviated letterings are stamped in the metal or plastic part in the back, it can be hard to see,
