It runs Windows XP, its a Lenovo Thinkpad with a SATA drive (also in AHCI): This is what happened. I took out the 160GB SATA from the laptop, and put it in an USB enclosure and created an image in Ghost 11 that is saved to a desktop computer, then. I restored the image to a 80GB SATA drive with a USB enclosure. I pop in that 80GB drive to the laptop and that message of "A Disk Read Error Occured" shows up. There is only one partition. I tried the following already: fixboot fixmbr Chkdsk /r (all clean) By the way, if I put it in an enclosure, it is accessible and does read data as normal. What can I do to fix it? Please don't ask me to reformat, I want the laptop to use that image. Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Error Raymond Updated 4 years ago Windows 101 Comments When you have a problem while using your computer and you receive an error message during a crash, you're hoping the message will point toward the cause and then it can be a disk read error occurred vista appropriately rectified. This doesn't always happen though and the message can be rather generic and the

system that sound straightforward but lead to the same problem, the error message isn't accurate enough for you to make a clear decision about what to do next. A while back I had a problem with my computer, and after some http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/304464/after-restoring-a-ghost-image-computer-boots-to-a-disk-read-error-occured-press-ctrl-alt-del-to-restart/ odd things happening such as a CD-R failing a burn and the computer starting to respond very slow, I decided to shut it down and leave it for a while. When I booted it up the next day, I got the error message:A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. However, the BIOS detected the hard drive just fine. After an exhaustive search around the Internet and forums, no one had the exact fix for this problem and there doesn't seem https://www.raymond.cc/blog/help-a-disk-read-error-occurred-press-ctrlaltdelete-to-restart/ to be one fix to try in preference to any others. What makes this even worse is there are so many different ways to attempt to fix this error, it could take days to get through them all. And to make matters worse, a disk read error might not actually mean there's a problem with the hard drive itself! Also there seems to be just as many software causes as hardware causes.Listed below are some of the possible solutions we came across to fix the "A disk read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+delete to restart" problem.1. Test the MemoryThis isn't actually mentioned that much around the web as a solution to the disk read error problem, but believe it or not, this was my problem. I used a tool called Memtest86+ and ran tests on my RAM, and indeed there were problems. After experimenting between different sticks and RAM slots I eventually deduced my RAM slot 2 was damaged because the sticks worked fine in the other slots. As this is a simple and non destructive test meaning you're not touching the hard drive risking further damage, it is recommended you try this first. It may sound odd but in fact memory problems can be responsible for a vast array of different errors on a system where testing your RAM might be the last thing you think of.2. Try the Drive on Another MachineAs we've said, although this problem sounds like a simple

I booted the computer (Windows XP SP3) with the bootable disc and cloned the first disk onto the second disk: first disk: Western Digital WD1600AAJS (160 GB, contains WinXP SP3 disk read error and all my data) second disk: Seagate ST3500418AS (500 GB, empty, sealed from the factory) I used all the default options proposed by Acronis Disk Director (automatically resize the partition in the destination disk to fill the entire disk, "NT signature" was left unchecked). I turned off the computer, disconnected the first disk, and connected the second disk in its place (I used the same SATA port on the mainboard, the SATA0 port). I turned on the computer and I was greeted with this message: A disk read error occurred Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart Is this normal behaviour? Please note that I used all the default options, I didn't change any option. I've noticed something interesting. The original disk had an offset of 31.5 KiB (32256 bytes). The second disk, after the clone operation, had an offset of 1024 KiB (1048576 bytes). I suspect the problem is probably related to this
