May 2008, 07:41 You must clone the vdi files => see user doc. For copying path must be the same. stefan.becker Volunteer Posts: 7350Joined: 7. Jun 2007, 21:53 Top Reply with quote by vragec » 22. Opened 8 years ago Last modified 6 years ago Disk Read Error Occurred using VHD => Fixed in SVN/next release Reported by: hoogie76 Owned by: Priority: major Component: virtual disk Version: VirtualBox 2.1.4 Keywords: Cc: Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows Description Using an existing vhd from VPC 2007, created about 4 months ago. Base O/S is Windows Server 2008 and Virtual Instance is XP-SP3. Running VBox 2.1.4 VBox, installed with no errors and mounted XP VHD with no problems. VBox XP instance ran fine, connected fine, all good. Came back from lunch yesterday to find xp instance, black screened with "disk read error occurred" message. Only responds to 'Turn Off' No reboot or shutdown had occurred to the host, just screen https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=6627 saver. VPC was able to open the vhd and boot but would hang on reactivate windows due to hardware changes. Restore backup of VHD, all running fine again unber Vbox and VPC (not at the same time) Start up VBox this morning XP instance runs fine. Go for coffee, come back and XP instance under VBox is black screened with "Disk Read Error has Occurred" message on screen. No host shutdown or restart, screen https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3430 saver did kick on. XP Instance under VBox only responds to 'turn off'. Restore VHD image again and works under vpc and VBox. Try and reproduce by letting screen saver kick on, but VBox instance is still okay. Once "Disk read error has occured" message comes up, XP instance running under VBox is not bootable and continually shows "disk read error occurred" message. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart" A friend of mine recently did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu and I had him copy all the files (including hidden items) from his Home folder onto a couple external hard drives (with NTFS partitions on them, I think). I'm not exactly sure how he re-added the machines to his inventory, but he did copy his .Virtualbox folder from his external drive back to his new Home folder. Anyway, when I tried to start up one of his machines, it spit an error message out similar to this one: Failed to power up VM! Error info: Medium '/home/matt/VMImages/WindowsXPSP3.vdi' is not accessible. Could not open the hard disk '/home/matt/VMImages/WindowsXPSP3.vdi'. I went into the Machine settings to check and see what it was using for storage (assuming the path name was incorrect) and re-selected the vdi file for the virtual disk. Also, not too sure what the problem might be, I added the user to the vboxusers group and changed the permissions for everything
