disk read error occurred Discussion in 'Hardware' started by nebbens, Mar 14, 2011. nebbens Private E-2 I have a hp compaq nx7400 a disk read error occurred windows 8 with Windows XP installed. I put a new hd in shortly after windows 10 disk read error new years and everything has been working fine. Recently while in use the machine shut down and when it a disk read error occurred windows 7 laptop rebooted it said "a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+Del to restart". I can't get to where it tries to boot Windows to try safe mode--message appears right after post. I've https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/a-disk-read-error-occurred-press-ctrl-alt-del-to-restart-227333/ tried several things in the recovery console from CD: fixboot, chkdsk, fixmbr, bootcfg and also did check hdd and test memory from the bios. All checks run fine without errors, but still wont boot. I also ran through the "Repairing Windows XP in Eight Commands" (http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/). I was able to put the hd into an enclosure and work with it on another computer http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php?threads/a-disk-read-error-occurred.234328/ (backup some files, etc). Any other ideas for me? I don't think the drive is actually bad, but seems to be a problem with finding XP or something... Thanks in advance for any help you can give. nebbens, Mar 14, 2011 #1 kench Private First Class you might check to make sure there's not a floppy in the drive...this will give an access error too...but if not I'd say your hdd is toast... kench, Mar 14, 2011 #2 nebbens Private E-2 no floppy drive even on the machine, but if the drive were bad I shouldn't be able to access it from another computer, right? nebbens, Mar 14, 2011 #3 sach2 Major Geek Extraordinaire So when you have the HD connected to the laptop and run Recovery Console off CD it sees the Windows installation and lets you sign into it to run commands such as fixboot and fixmbr? sach2, Mar 14, 2011 #4 magical2099 Private First Class Looking over your issue led me on an epic google-hunt, which led me to this. Further on towards the bottom are some interesting theories

HP sent me a recovery http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1455304 disk to reinstall XP Professional. I went through the whole process of formatting the disk installing the software to the point where it tells you to restart the computer and now it starts http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/windows-xp-setup-setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives/ and just says:- A disk read error occurredPress Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Never gets past here with the drive empty, with the recovery disk in or the XP disk in. I'm thinking I disk read should reinstall the op system, but I can't as the disk drive isn't recognised. Can anyone help please?? } Windows Setup: Setup did not find any hard disk drives… Written on July 25th 2009 at 13:10. Last modified: July 9, 2012 Hard Disk Gone Missing? After booting from the Windows XP setup CD the blue setup screen appears and goes the through the usual process of installing it’s drivers. When you reach the Welcome Screen and choose to install Windows you are presented with the error “Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer” similar to the screenshot below. Some Common Symptoms You are presented with the error message: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer at the point in the setup where you are asked to press ENTER to "setup Windows XP now" You are presented with the error message Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer after pressing ‘R‘ to "repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console" Explanation This error will appear most often when your hard disk is on an SATA or SCSI controller and Windows setup does not have a suitable driver. In most cases these days you won't have a floppy disk either to load the drivers. There are a few ways to deal with this ranging from the very simple (hopefully says you!) to the long and somewhat difficult. See the solutions below for more. Solution 1 - Set Your SATA Controller to Compatability/IDE/Standard Mode Enter your BIOS/Setup Utility Locate the Serial ATA or SATA configuration section I've seen this section called ‘On Chip Config' on some Phoenix Award BIOS On Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads it's in Config > Serial ATA (Sata) Change the mode of the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE or Compatibility Save & Exit Reboot and begin the Windows Setup again. If Windows Setup successfully detects your hard disk this time then go ahead and perform the Windows Setup. When Windows setup completes change the mode back to AHCI in the BIOS If your problem still exists after changing this option then change it back to AHCI and proceed to Solution 2 below. Solution 2 - Load your SATA drivers using a Floppy Disk (or CD) UPDATE JAN 2011 - Create A Custom Windows XP CD with your SATA drivers as an alternative to using a floppy disk. If you need help finding your SATA drivers see the article How To Find Your SATA Drivers If you already have a floppy disk drive in your computer then great, proceed to Step 2.
