TiteLoop (TechnicalUser) (OP) 14 Jul 06 15:21 Hello,This question is less about XP and more about Windows.I am trying to get Autocad 12 http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1254517 to run on a newer computer. It installs just fine but when you go to run it you get an Divide by zero or overflow error! It runs fine on an old computer under Windows 98.In looking everywhere the general consensus seems to be "it is because the computer is running too fast".I could more easily understand that it is because we've gone to non 8087 math co-processors, or operating system changes, but speed?!?!I am trying to understand why/how code could be written that would allow an answer that came back more quickly from math hardware to cause this problem.I could image the opposite, an answer that came back too slowly, but too fast?Anybody know the reason or could illuminate how speed would play in this? RE: Devide by Zero. Freestone (MIS) 14 Jul 06 16:09 Almost all code that causes the Divide By Zero error on faster machines is due to the use of software timing loops rather than the use of hardware based timing. These loops were almost always used to introduce a delay in processing so something else in hardware could finish. Since new PCs are now vastly faster than the platform the code was originally written for, these softwar

What happens is that when I turn my computer on, as soon as Windows XP starts it goes to a BSOD. It says: Stop: 0x0000007f (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) Beginning dump of divide by physical memoryClick to expand... Apparently it is a Divide by Zero error, from what I gathered from looking on the internet for it, but I have no idea how it happened or how to fix it. Encrypt, Oct 4, 2006 #1 Sponsor kiwiguy Joined: Aug 17, 2003 Messages: 17,584 It usually indicates a hardware failure, memory failure or a driver (software) corruption. Can you start OK in safe divide by zero mode? (tap F8 twice per second from power-on until the safe mode screen comes up, select "safe mode with networking") kiwiguy, Oct 4, 2006 #2 Encrypt Thread Starter Joined: Oct 4, 2006 Messages: 4 Yeah, safe mode seems to be working okay. Encrypt, Oct 4, 2006 #3 kiwiguy Joined: Aug 17, 2003 Messages: 17,584 While in safe mode, reapply all drivers (video, motherboard chipset for starters) and see it that helps. As it's OK in safe mode, chances are it's software (a driver that has become corrupt). kiwiguy, Oct 4, 2006 #4 Encrypt Thread Starter Joined: Oct 4, 2006 Messages: 4 The video drivers are not installing (they say 'try to setup yout display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup'), and the chipset drivers don't seem to be installing fully. The installer quits as the installshield starts. Encrypt, Oct 4, 2006 #5 Encrypt Thread Starter Joined: Oct 4, 2006 Messages: 4 I finally reinstalled everything and it's all working now. At least I know it wasn't a hardware fault. Thanks for your help. Encrypt, Oct 4, 2006 #6 Sponsor This thread has been Locked and is not open to further replies. Please start a New Thread if you're
