How to fix this compilation error? package org.apache.pdfbox.pdmodel.PDDocument; import java.io.*; import org.apache.pdfbox.pdmodel.PDDocument; public class pdf { public static void main(String args[]) { } } java import compiler-errors classpath share|improve this question edited May 12 '13 at 7:42 asked java error package system does not exist May 12 '13 at 5:53 user1952529 53117 Is this compilation error from javac run on a command line, or from your IDE? It's not enough to put the jar in the same directory - you need to add it to the classpath of the tool you're using. –Greg Kopff May 12 '13 at 5:55 2 package org.apache.pdfbox.pdmodel.PDDocument; Your package should not be the fully qualified name of an existing class! –Andrew Thompson May 12 '13 at 6:15 thanks andrew. i will remove it now. –user1952529 May 12 '13 at 6:30 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote Putting the jar in the same folder or package does not add it to the class path. You need to mention the path of the jar in your class path while running your java program. Here is the syntax for that: To compile: javac -classpath .;yourjar.jar src/your/package/*.java To run java -classpath .;yourjar.jar src/your/package/yourprogrammeclassname share|improve this answer edited May 12 '13 at 6:04 answered May 12 '13 at 5:56 Juned Ahsan 44.8k64876 That won't fix a compilation error. –Stephen C May 12 '13 at 5:57 For compilation you can set CLASSPATH environment variable. –Juned Ahsan May 12 '13 at 6:00 1 Any classes

I have 2 public classes http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16504603/solved-java-imported-package-does-not-exist that will be used by another product. I used the package directive in each of the java files. package com.company.thing; class MyClass ... When I try to compile a test app that uses that I add import com.company.thing.*; The javac compiler fails with errors about com.company does not exist. (even if I compile it in the same directory as the class files I just made a package of) I am sure I am doing something bone-headed and silly. I've read the http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/package/usepkgs.html http://stackoverflow.com/questions/631682/help-with-packages-in-java-import-does-not-work pages and tried to set up a directory structure like /com/company/thing etc, but either I have totally screwed it all up or am missing something else. EDIT thanks for the suggestions - I had tried the classpath previously. It does not help. I tried compiling javac -classpath

Kindly accept my apologies if posted in a wrong forum. I am working on Tomcat 5.5 and Java SE 5.0. I am working on servlets. I do have a servlet file at the following directory. this is not a tomcat directory, but a simple directory as shown : NO 1: does not C:\myproject\beerV1\src\com\example\web .. Over here at Web i have servlet file by name BeerSelect.java. The package name give in this servlet file is "package com.example.web" (excluding the double quotes). Now, i have another servlet program , a src file and a .class file at the following path.. NO 2: C:\myproject\beerV1\src\com\example\model The problem i am facing is when i go to compile the Servlet file from the path does not exist as shown in the first path (No 1) my servlet is not being compiled and i get the following error.. BeerSelect.java:3: package com.example.model does not exist import com.example.model.*; ^ BeerSelect.java:19: cannot find symbol symbol : class BeerExpert location: class com.example.web.BeerSelect BeerExpert be=new BeerExpert(); ^ BeerSelect.java:19: cannot find symbol symbol : class BeerExpert location: class com.example.web.BeerSelect BeerExpert be=new BeerExpert(); ^ 3 errors As far as my knowledge goes the package path is correct as described in the NO 1 and N0 2 above. Please help me out of this.. thank you. This is a sample code from Head First Servlet and JSP, chapter 3 page 84. The easiest way to do that is to navigate to C:\myproject\beerV1\src\ and compile/run your classes from there: C:\myproject\beerV1\src\com\example\web>javac BeerSelect.java BeerSelect.java:3: package com.example.model does not exist import com.example.model.*; ^ BeerSelect.java:6: cannot find symbol symbol : class BeerExpert location: class com.example.web.BeerSelect BeerExpert exp = new BeerExpert(); ^ BeerSelect.java:6: cannot find symbol symbol : class BeerExpert location: class com.example.web.BeerSelect BeerExpert exp = new BeerExpert(); ^ 3 errors
