wallet? By Rachel Rickard Straus Published: 15:00 GMT, 14 September 2012 | Updated: 14:23 GMT, 15 September 2012 e-mail 13 View comments Note worthy: Some banknotes can be worth more than their face value The Bank of England is auctioning bank notes next week that to the untrained eye look no different to those issued at ATMs. They are £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes issued on November 2 last year and have nothing discernible to mark them out. However, because of their condition and serial number they are worth a mint. Some are likely to fetch hundreds of pounds at auction next week. One £50 has a guide price of up to £400. [See the item]While these notes are particularly special as they have not been in circulation and some have matching, low serial numbers, experts say not all valuable notes need bear these qualities. In fact an unassuming note you would hand over at a check out could be worth much more than its face value, just because of its serial number. Experts say there are several factors that can increase the value of a note. The easiest to identify is age. The Bank of England has been issuing notes for more than 200 years. The earliest of these are extremely rare and can be worth considerable sums – but of course these will no longer be in circulation – so they’d be much more likely to come to light in your attic than your purse. Some notes are printed with some sort of error. Because these are quickly picked up on and corrected, there are generally very few of these in circulation and so they can be valuable. More...
