For reference, my setup is Windows Vista x64 with Service Pack 1 and all other updates applied. After much trawling through the installation log file I discovered that my installation was failing because CS4 was 'unable to find the folder at token named SharedDocuments' - which I assumed meant that Windows was not directing the installer to my Shared Documents directory, into which it presumably wanted to put the language packs. I had previously moved the Public Documents folder to a different drive (as I do with all my special user folders - it's just common sense), and found that by recreating the C:\Users\Public\Documents folder the installtion proceeded without errors.
