However, there are things that are likely to be true, and we are going to talk about them. Well, you’ve received this nasty “554 5.7.1” SMTP error message—maybe even more than one. Why did it happen? Let’s talk about it. The most likely reason for this error is that recipients’ spam filters didn’t let your message through. There are a couple of things that might have led them to reject your message: Your IP address (the one associated with the domain name and email address itself) has been added to a blacklist commonly available somewhere, which is used by spam filters when they check incoming emails. There are online resources that allow you to check if an IP address is on a specific blacklist (we will talk about that later on). Your IP address has been added to a recipient’s private blacklist, which isn’t publicly available; in this case, it’s much harder to find out whether this is what happened. Causes of a 554 5.7.

Sender's Reputation When a sending site connects to MIT to submit mail, MIT's spam filter does some lookups based on the IP address of the connecting site. If the spam filter determines that the sender's IP address has a "negative reputation", it will reject the mail with a 554 5.7.1 error. To investigate problems with the sender's reputation, consult http://ipremoval.sms.symantec.com/lookup/ Sender's DNS In addition to considering the reputation of the sender's IP address, MIT's spam filter also checks to see if the sender has configured reverse DNS for their IP address. Loosely speaking, MIT requires that the sender have a properly-configured hostname, and treats them as a spammer if they do not. This topic will walk you through the steps of what to do if you get delivery status notification (DSN) error code 5.7.1 or Exchange NDR 5.7.1 in a non-delivery report (NDR). This information also applies to error codes 5.7.0 through 5.7.999 in Exchange Online and Office 365. There can be several causes for dsn error code 5.7.1, for which solutions are provided later in this topic. Email user help if you sent a message and then received Exchange NDR 5.7.1 or 5.7.0 through 5.7.999 There's reasons you might get these error messages. Generally, the error indicates that your organization has a security setting for emails that is preventing your message from reaching the recipient. It might be one of the following problems: You don’t have permission to send to the recipient. You don’t have permission to send to the distribution group or one of its subgroups. You don’t have permission to send email through an email server that’s between you and the recipient. Your message was routed to the wrong email server.
