When I deploy and then try to run on a test machine: Migrate.exe CodeFirst.dll /startupConfigurationFile="..\web.config" I get: no connection string named xxx could be found in the application config file ...even though there is a connection string with that name in the web.config. There is only one .config file, there isn't a config file for the dll that I'm running against I attempted to entity framework migrate.exe parameters declare my connection string manually: Migrate.exe CodeFirst.dll /connectionString="Data Source=192.168...;Initial Catalog=Database;" /connectionProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" but that still gave the the same error for some reason... Is it ignoring the connection string that I'm passing in and trying to look for one again? Why would it do that? but that gave me a really weird error: The migrations configurations type "Source=192.168... could not be found in the assembly CodeFirst.dll I wondered if it had something to do with spaces, so I tried changing 'data source' to 'server' and Initial Catalog to 'database' but that didn't help. edit: fixed quotation marks I've seen similar questions but they were all about running inside of visual studio and I have no issues when trying to do that. Any more ideas of what I can do? Has anyone gotten either of these options to work? c# entity-framework code-first share|improve this question edited Feb 25 '15 at 17:01 asked Feb 25 '15 at 16:37 thepaulpage 2,41711533 1 do you have the non standard quotes in the commandline? –Daniel A. The command looks something like: ProjectName\packages\EntityFramework.4.3.1\tools\migrate.exe MyAssembly /startupdirectory:ProjectName\bin\Debug /startupconfigurationfile:ProjectName\Web.config /verbose However, for various reasons I would like to avoid using the Web.config and just pass in the correct connection string at the time of the migration: ProjectName\packages\EntityFramework.4.3.1\tools\migrate.exe MyAssembly /startupdirectory:ProjectName\bin\Debug /connectionString:"Data Source=awesomeserver;Initial Catalog=awesomedatabase;User Id=funkyuser;Password=crazypassword" /verbose This does not work. Worse, it crashes migrate.exe with a NullReferenceException. The connection string is identical to the one we use in our Web.config. Anyone encountered this before? Is my connection string format wrong? Bug? .net entity-framework-4 connection-string ef-migrations share|improve this question edited Mar 14 '12 at 18:03 asked Mar 14 '12 at 15:47 jslatts 5,74242734 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 18 down vote accepted Ok, we figured it out. When running without the Web.config, the connectionProviderName parameter must also be passed in: ProjectName\packages\EntityFramework.4.3.1\tools\migrate.exe MyAssembly /startupdirectory:ProjectName\bin\Debug /connectionProviderName:"System.Data.SqlClient" /connectionString:"Data Source=awesomeserver;Initial Catalog=awesomedatabase;User Id=funkyuser;Password=crazypassword" /verbose I have confirmed that this works. share|improve this answer edited Mar 15 '12 at 3:59 answered Mar 14 '12 at 18:03 jslatts 5,74242734 2 +1 Getting a Nu
