and Dangerous Data Entry Disasters Comments Off on Avoiding Costly and Dangerous Data Entry Disasters Avoiding Costly and Dangerous Data Entry Disasters Posted by Lior Weinstein on Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 Did you http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/error-of-original-entry.html know that last year there were 20,000 pregnant men in Great Britain? Why wasn’t this earth shattering news? Because it was a data entry error. If you input data into Excel on a regular basis, or you hire people to do that for you, you know that there are going to be mistakes. Image source: Careerealism.com When people are sitting for hours typing in numbers, they http://www.cogniview.com/blog/avoiding-costly-and-dangerous-data-entry-disasters/ can easily transpose numbers or input the wrong data. Wrong data can lead to serious problems. Make your data entry process easier and you’ll have fewer mistakes. Types of Errors  Transcription errors: People make mistakes when they are typing fast. They hit the wrong key and don’t notice. They input the information in the wrong way, they don’t spell a word properly, or they just make a typo. They type the same information in twice. This can also happen when using optical character recognition (OCR) programs, if there are errors on the paper, or the ink is smudged and can’t be read properly. Transposition Errors: This is a remarkably common mistake when people are typing in numbers. Instead of putting in 2367, they put in 2376 or something like that. People who are typing quickly and inputting many numbers are going to eventually make these kinds of mistakes. How to Reduce Data Entry Mistakes You will never be able to eliminate these kind of errors, but you can reduce the amount of mistakes. Having someone else proofread or double check the work is invaluable. We always catch other people’s mistakes much easier than our own. That i

Shortly after take-off from Sydney's runway 16R, however, air traffic control observed the jet enter the departure flightpath of a parallel runway, 16L."Following advice from air traffic control, the flightcrew identified a problem with the onboard navigation systems," it said. "Attempts to troubleshoot and rectify the problem resulted in further degradation of the navigation system, as well as to the aircraft's flight guidance and flight control systems."The crew decided to return to Sydney, but poor weather and the aircraft's degraded systems limited the aircraft to visual conditions. The crew ended up flying to Melbourne manually. After a go-around at Melbourne airport caused by a spurious enhanced ground proximity warning system alert, they landed without further incident. The entire flight took 1h 54 min, and after a few hours on the ground, and "extensive troubleshooting", no faults were found. After 3h, the aircraft departed for Kuala Lumpur without further incident."The aircraft was not fitted with an upgraded flight management system that would have prevented the data entry error via either automated initialisation or automatic correction of manual errors,

We have analyzed data from several clinical research databases at a single academic medical center to assess frequency, distribution and features of data entry errors.Error rates detected by the double-entry method ranged from 2.3 to 26.9%. Errors were due to both mistakes in data entry and to misinterpretation of the information in the original documents. Error detection based on data constraint failure significantly underestimated total error rates and constraint-based alarms integrated into the database appear to prevent only a small fraction of errors. Many errors were non-random, organized in special and cognitive clusters, and some could potentially affect the interpretation of the study results. Further investigation is needed into the methods for detection and prevention of data er
