Zip Archives won't unarchive... Hi Folks,I'm in dire straits here. A compression error hoi3 couple of months ago I decided to compress some of my backups to conserve space on my compression error cannot write to temp file. (506) external drive. I'm running OSX 10.7 and arching the folders didn't seem to be an issue at all. The OSX version of the zip archiver didn't throw any

Now, it throws an error to the effect:Unable to expand "Archive.zip" in "Folder".(Error 1 - Operation not permitted)I've tried a number of solutions including the archive into another directory, playing with the permissions, running

the zip utility in both 32- and 64-bit modes. I've even moved some of the archives to different versions of OSX and Windows and nothing seems to be working. Can anyone shed light on this issue?ThanksStefan MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1), 15" MBP, 11" MBA, Mini Lion Server Posted on Mar 8, 2012 11:09 AM I have this question too Close Q: Zip Archives won't unarchive... [ -V ] [ name ... ] Description Compress reduces the size of the named files using adaptive unable to expand tar.gz operation not permitted Lempel-Ziv coding. Whenever possible, each file is replaced by one with the extension .Z, while keeping

the same ownership modes, access and modification times. If no files are specified, the standard input is compressed to the standard output. Compress archive utility error 17 file exists will only attempt to compress regular files. In particular, it will ignore symbolic links. If a file has multiple hard links, compress will refuse to compress it unless the -f flag is given. If -f is not given https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3789623?tstart=0 and compress is run in the foreground, the user is prompted as to whether an existing file should be overwritten. Compressed files can be restored to their original form using uncompress or zcat. uncompress takes a list of files on its command line and replaces each file whose name ends with .Z and which begins with the correct magic number with an uncompressed file without the .Z. The uncompressed file will have the mode, ownership and http://linux.die.net/man/1/compress timestamps of the compressed file. The -c option makes compress/uncompress write to the standard output; no files are changed. zcat is identical to uncompress -c. zcat uncompresses either a list of files on the command line or its standard input and writes the uncompressed data on standard output. zcat will uncompress files that have the correct magic number whether they have a .Z suffix or not. If the -r flag is specified, compress will operate recursively. If any of the file names specified on the command line are directories, compress will descend into the directory and compress all the files it finds there. The -V flag tells each of these programs to print its version and patchlevel, along with any preprocessor flags specified during compilation, on stderr before doing any compression or uncompression. Compress uses the modified Lempel-Ziv algorithm popularized in "A Technique for High Performance Data Compression", Terry A. Welch, IEEE Computer, vol. 17, no. 6 (June 1984), pp. 8-19. Common substrings in the file are first replaced by 9-bit codes 257 and up. When code 512 is reached, the algorithm switches to 10-bit codes and continues to use more bits until the limit specified by the -b flag is reached (default 16). Bits must be between 9 and 16. The default can be changed in the source to allow compress to be run on a sm

Current Solution We have case-esac block in shell wrapper that handles messages as follows; case "$MSG" in "This file is not changed; compression does not save space.") echo "$MSG" ;; *unchanged*) echo "$MSG" ;; *) echo ERROR ;; esac Problem Scenario The compress command when called unable to expand through wrapper (for some files) produces error message (let say, Type 1); -- file unchanged However, executing the same command (for same set of files) on command line produces different error message (let say, Type 2); This file is not changed; compression does not save space. You can see similar behavior with the zip program. By refusing to compress the file, the developer assumed they were improving performance. More often, compress utilities simply check if the resulting file would be smaller (since the compression algorithm adds a table, which is overhead). For example, the IBM manual page shows that compress has -f/-F options (see link) which force compression. Finally, "already co
