Shadow Copy Service errors. You can then use the Windows Event ID (and a Google search) to identify the cause of the VSS Failure and consult with Microsoft for a solution. No settings can be changed in Retrospect to fix this error since the problem is being reported by Shadow Copy Service itself. Once you correct the problem with the Shadow Copy Service, the error will go away. VSS could be failing due to a conflict with a 3rd party program that is already utilizing the Volume Shadow Copy Service. The errors in the Windows event log will help identify the problem. The error -1017 for Open File Backup will not stop the backup from completing, but you may see some -1020 Sharing Violation errors for files that are open and can not be copied. If you can fix the -1017 error, the -1020 errors will go away. (ie The Retrospect application is not running and is launched by the Launcher Service to run the backup.) if it is you will need to change the logon details for the Launcher Service to that of the user account you normally use to run Retrospect. Alternatively you can just leave the Retrospect application running and just minimise it if you want the application window out of the way. However I noticed the files are owned by System -- not my user acct. I tried to change the logon details but since my user acct does not have a p
fine, but it can't access open files; when the backup starts, it gives the error: Can't use Open File Backup option for Zim (C:), error -1017 (insufficient permissions) http://osdir.com/ml/sysutils.retrospect.general/2007-06/msg00000.html In the Windows event log, there's a VSS error paired with this error: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Please check to see that the Event Service and Volume Shadow Copy Service are operating properly. I've searched around for various solutions to this issue, and haven't found anything error 1017 that helps: * I made sure that the VSS service (and another apparently related service, MS Software Shadow Copy Provider) were started (the first time I tried a backup, those services weren't started), but even after starting them I get the same error. I tried looking for a service called "Event Service", but didn't see anything (other than the retrospect error 1017 "Event Log" service, which is running). * A Retrospect technote notes that Open File Backup doesn't work with FAT, but my C: drive is NTFS, so this doesn't apply. * Another Retrospect technote (which I can't find right now) suggests that it's related to mounted network drives, but that isn't the case for me (C: is my main disk). * A Microsoft technote on VSS suggests looking at a particular registry entry, but that didn't help (I only have the "System" entry under that key, and it looks the same as the technote suggests it should). Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks, nj Thread at a glance: Next Message by Date: Anybody know off-hand where Retrospect client stores it's password files/hashes? Hi all... For a security class I'm taking at the U, they are having us to an analysis of one of our "critical systems". I chose our backup system for a number of reasons. As I go through the analysis methodology, one of the things they have us do is attempt to cr
