They are configured to start as Local System account and start mode is Auto. All services are fail with error 1053 "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". I've inserted logging to one of services and investigated that problem is outside our code. No single line of code executed. It seems that problem with .net code permissions on the machine. But http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6279030/net-service-fails-with-error-1053-on-windows-server-2003-r2-sp2 problem reproduces only on client machine (two different client with identical symptoms). We have a few Windows 2003 SP2 servers, each running .NET services launched from both local machine and windows share. But already second time we get error: Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion when trying to restart services on one specific server, second works as it should be. Share with executable is available, opens normally, have right permissions. error 1053 windows So everything looks the same on both servers, but one gives that errors to all services we launch. If we reboot that server- it's working ok for a few days or a week, and then it starts again. Anyone have suggestions what can that be? windows-server-2003 services windows-services share|improve this question asked Nov 26 '12 at 14:45 elgato 1112 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote There is a hot fix available form Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886695 This problem occurs because the Iisutil.dll DLL adds an access control entry (ACE) to the desktop security descriptor for the services that run in the system context. The ACE lets the Microsoft Internet Information Services Worker Process Group (IIS_WPG) account log on to the system service desktop. However, if another process sets the desktop security descriptor for the services that run in the system context to a null value, Iisutil.dll changes the discretionary access control list (DACL). Iisutil.dll changes the DACL list so that any service that uses the noninteractive local system account cannot log on. share|improve this answer answered Nov 26 '12 at 15:31 Dave 20.6k73552 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote Anyone have suggestions what can that be? Not what you want to hear, but it could be almost anything. At the moment, all you really know is the service is sometimes taking too long to either startup or shutdown. and it may take you much longer than normal to stop or pause a managed Microsoft Windows service: Could not stop the (Windows service-name) service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. What Causes Service Error 1053 The service error 1053 usually occurs when there are problems between the actual application service you are trying to stop or pause and the Advapi32.dll file. This DLL file is part of one of the advanced API services library that supports several APIs that include several security and registry calls. How to Fix Windows Error 1053 1. First, make sure you obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft .NET Framework. Download Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (see the link in "Additional Resources," below). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839174 2. You will be asked if you want to save the file to the computer. Select "Save File" and the service pack will now be downloaded onto your computer. 3. Open the downloaded icon (it will be on the desktop or in your specified downloads folder). 4. Follow the steps to complete the installation. Once the updated service pack is installed you should no longer see the Error 1053 message appear when you try to start, stop or pause a Windows service. Other Optional Fixes: Some users have reported solving error 1053 by: 1. Downloading a top-grade registry cleaner to remove any orphan registry entries. 2. Once ensuring the registry is cleaned and optimized, increase the Windows Service Timeout from the set default time of 30 seconds and bumping it up to 2 minutes using a registry hack found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824344 (located in section 3 of the article).
