instructions to install cygwin sshd as a Windows service, sshd refused to start. After some digging around on the net, I found error 1053 windows server 2003 mention of a dependency on Windows' "Computer Browser" service. Sure enough,
Error 1053 The Service Did Not Respond Windows Server 2008 R2
after starting the Computer Browser service, sshd would start. The most elegant way to ensure that Computer the service did not respond in a timely fashion windows 7 Browser starts before sshd is by including this dependency in the registry information for the sshd service. This can be done by adding a REG_MULTI_SZ entry named "DependOnService" to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/886695 HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\sshd. It should be assigned the value "Browser", corresponding to the registry's name for the Computer Browser service. This method is better than simply setting Computer Broswer to Automatic in the services management console, because it will still possible for Windows to attempt to start sshd before starting Computer Browser. IIRC, after a clean Windows XP installation, http://osdir.com/ml/network.ssh.windows/2002-06/msg00040.html the Computer Browser service is enabled by default, but if you're like me and decide to tweak the startup services by changing them from Automatic to Manual, then you might run into this problem. (Of course, by applying the fix described above, Computer Browser can be left as Manual, and the sshd service will cause Windows to start it.) Ederly, perhaps you can add this information directly to your sshd setup webpage, as I believe the information you provide is for previous versions. Also, you should include that the "None" group, gid 513, must remain in /etc/group, or, in cygwin 1.3.10-1, setgid will exit with an "Invalid argument" error. (This doesn't happen in cygwin 1.3.9). I'm trying to install an SSH server on my dedicated win 2003 box at crystaltech. Have any CT dedicated server users successfully started the sshd service on their machine? Were there any special steps you had to take or are there any reasons error 1053 windows that it simply won't work? For the record I've tried the following products all unsuccessfully (all latest versions):cygwin install with openssh package (ssh-host-config, various combinatiosn of settings tried, settings user file permissions, etc..)copsshfreesshdHere is the error I get:$ cygrunsrv.exe -S sshdcygrunsrv: Error starting a service: StartService: Win32 error 1053:The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.or:$ net start sshdThe service is not responding to the control function.More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.WinSSHD does work but I really need to be able to run cygwin apps inside it and it only provides the windows prompt. Thanks,Colin Logged Print Pages: [1] Go Up « previous next » NTS Forums» General» Windows Dedicated Server Forum» SSH service won't start..
