instructions to install cygwin sshd as a Windows service, sshd refused to start. After some digging around on the net, I found mention of a dependency on Windows' "Computer Browser" service. Sure enough, after starting the Computer Browser service, sshd would error 1053 windows server 2003 start. The most elegant way to ensure that Computer Browser starts before sshd is by

including this dependency in the registry information for the sshd service. This can be done by adding a REG_MULTI_SZ entry named "DependOnService" to error 1053 windows 8 HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\sshd. It should be assigned the value "Browser", corresponding to the registry's name for the Computer Browser service. This method is better than simply setting Computer Broswer to Automatic in the services management console, because it will still https://www.itefix.net/content/openssh-sshd-service-wont-start possible for Windows to attempt to start sshd before starting Computer Browser. IIRC, after a clean Windows XP installation, the Computer Browser service is enabled by default, but if you're like me and decide to tweak the startup services by changing them from Automatic to Manual, then you might run into this problem. (Of course, by applying the fix described above, Computer Browser can be left as Manual, and the sshd service will cause Windows to start http://osdir.com/ml/network.ssh.windows/2002-06/msg00040.html it.) Ederly, perhaps you can add this information directly to your sshd setup webpage, as I believe the information you provide is for previous versions. Also, you should include that the "None" group, gid 513, must remain in /etc/group, or, in cygwin 1.3.10-1, setgid will exit with an "Invalid argument" error. (This doesn't happen in cygwin 1.3.9). RAW] Hi, we do run some 200 systems here on which we installed part of the cygwin suite to maintain our systems. On some of them, cygrunsrv will not start the sshd (for softwareversions please see below). Playing a bit with sshd, we are able to get it started and working with invoker.exe (http://www.idetix.com/files/invkr153.zip) without problems. Haveing had this problems since quite some time, we did some testing. According to this, sshd never gets started at all, but cygrunsrv just sits there and waits until a timeout occurs. The error getting logged to the eventlog is: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7000 Date: 2/12/2002 Time: 4:39:58 PM User: N/A Computer: mycomputer Description: The OpenSSH service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. doing it using the service manager you will get a pop up containing: Could not start the OpenSSH service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. As I do not have access to the source, is there anybody, who either has access to the source, so we can try to find out the reason or likes to investigate this ? Thanks for your help. Windows: NT4 SP6a and Win2K Cygwin: all release, upgrading to the latest cygwin.dll did not help, here are the versions of one machine as an example: cygrunsrv 0.94-2 cygutils 0.9.7-1 cygwin 1.3.6-6 openssh 3.0.2p1-4 openssl 0.9.6b-2 Mit besten Grüssen, Kind regards, Patrick Hildenbrand -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/ [prev in list] [next in list] [prev in thread] [next in thread] Configure | About | News | Addalist | SponsoredbyKoreLogic
