Fix Windows 7 Homegroup Service that Will Not Start Posted on July 20, 2013 by Josh I recently upgraded my primary desktop computer with a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and video card, so naturally I had to reinstall Windows. https://joshmccarty.com/2013/07/fix-windows-7-homegroup-service-that-will-not-start/ When I booted into Windows and connected to my home network, I was prompted to choose the type of network; I chose Home because, well, it's my home https://hardforum.com/threads/windows-7-peer-networking-grouping-service.1784809/ network. By choosing a network location, you can enable or disable certain functionality, including HomeGroups. Windows will prompt you for the homegroup password when it detects a homegroup error 1068 on a "Home" network and connects to it.I have a HomeGroup set up on my other computers already, so Windows detected it and asked me for the HomeGroup password. I opened the Network and Sharing Center on my other desktop and went to the HomeGroup settings screen, but when I clicked on "View or print the homegroup error 1068 the password" nothing happened. The HomeGroup Settings screen allows you to view the HomeGroup password. After a bit of troubleshooting, I discovered that two of the three Services required for HomeGroups to function were not running. HomeGroup uses Peer Name Resolution Protocol, Peer Networking Grouping, and Peer Networking Identity Manager (in addition to the two HomeGroup services). HomeGroup requires these three services to function.I have previously written about HomeGroups and the services they need to work, but I could not get Peer Networking Grouping started because it has a dependency on the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service; unless it is running (which it wasn't), Peer Networking Grouping can't start. The Peer Networking Grouping service requires that the Peer Name Resolution Protocol and Peer Networking Identity Manager services are running.I tried starting Peer Name Resolution Protocol, but received an error message saying it would not start (along with an error code). Fortunately I found this forum post that provided a solution. I simply deleted the idstore.sst file located in C:\Wi

Oct 7, 2013 #1 c1001 Gawd Messages: 943 Joined: Oct 24, 2004 I setup a Homegroup on my laptop a year ago. I have three PCs on my home network. Yesterday I noticed that the laptop was not on the Homegroup, but the other two were. When I tried to rejoin the Homegroup I get the message "Windows cannot setup a Homegroup on this computer". In services.msc the Homegroup services (HomeGroup Listener, HomeGroup Provider, Peer Name Resolution Protocol, Peer Networking Grouping and Peer Networking Identity Manager) are running except for Peer Networking Grouping service: "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start", and Peer Name Resolution Protocol: "Error 5: Access is denied". Both services seem to be dependencies of one another. I have no ides if these services are what is actually preventing the laptop from joining the Homegroup, but they are a troubleshooting starting point. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? The laptop runs Windows 7 Professional, as do the other PCs. c1001, Oct 7, 2013 c1001, Oct 7, 2013 #1 Oct 7, 2013 #2 c1001 Gawd Messages: 943 Joined: Oct 24, 2004 bump c1001, Oct 7, 2013 c1001, Oct 7, 2013 #2 Oct 7, 2013 #3 Metraon Limp Gawd Messages: 307 Joined: Feb 23, 2011 In windows (Search program and files), type Services.msc There should be a list of active/inactive service. Or follow the link for alternatives ways to find Services.msc Find Peer Networking Grouping and Peer Networking Identity Manager, right click, Proprieties and set the Startup type to manual for both, and start the services with the button Start! If its not starting, something like a anti-virus program is blocking it. You can try to set the startup type to automatic and see if it works!
