attempt to cover them in this series of five blog posts. In this first post, I will cover Windows XP and Windows Vista / Windows 7 separately as they are two different services. Last I will cover one issue with OneCare. Note: Specifics on Windows Vista and Windows 7will come in a later blog post. Windows XP In Windows XP, the firewall service is named "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)", or SharedAccess service. Typical errors seen as either popups or within event logs when the service fails to start are: Cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet connection sharing (ICS) Service on local computer Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Error 1705: While starting windows http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/553417/firewall-error-1075/ firewall and internet connection sharing services Problems starting the Firewall Service in Windows XP are most commonly related to an issue with the Shared Access registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess The quickest resolution is generally to rebuild the key. Instructions for doing this are in the following article, along with a FIXIT link: You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2 Other things you will want to check are: Verify that the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" http://clusterwin.blogspot.com/2012/03/windows-firewall-service-fails-to-start.html service is started Verify that the service is configured to logon as Local System Account, as shown below: The above 3 items cover the vast majority of the issues with starting the Firewall in Windows XP. Windows Vista and later (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2) In Windows Vista and later, the firewall service is "Windows Firewall" (MPSSVC); it combines both Firewall and IPsec functionality. The first thing to check is that theBase Filtering engine (BFE)is running. There are a number of services dependent on the BFE service (including the Windows Firewall) that may also fail to start: IPsec Policy Agent (PolicyAgent) Windows Firewall IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Routing and Remote Access In my experience most of the issues starting these services are related to permissions. Typical errors seen in relation to starting this service are: Event ID: 7024 - The Windows Firewall service terminated with service-specific error 5 (0x5) Windows could not start the Base Filtering Engine service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied. Windows could not start the IPsec Policy Agent service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start. Windows could not start the Network Location Awareness on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor
dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion skip this and get http://www.gandalf.net/firewall/ your Base filter Engine working (see below) if your windows firewall service is missing and you do not have the entry in your registry ((Regedit hkey_local_machine/currentcontrolset/services/MpsSvs) get a copy of https://community.mcafee.com/thread/43230?tstart=0 MpsSvs Key from any other windows 7 computer export it and then import it into your registry You will need to fix permissions on the entry! Add full permissions error 1075 to Local Service & Network to the Registry Key Base filter Engine missing or will not start with permissions issue IF your BFE entry is missing (Regedit hkey_local_machine/currentcontrolset/services/BFE) get a copy of BFE Key from any other windows 7 computer export it and then import it into your registry You will need to fix permissions on the entry! Browse error 1075 firewall to the location for the BFE service in the registry (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\BFE\), right click and select permissions. 2. In the "Permissions for Policy" window, click advanced | Add. 3. Once the "Select Users, Computers or Group" box appears, change the "From this location:" to point to the local machine name. 4. After changing the search location, enter "NT Service\BFE" in the "Enter the object name to select" box and click "Check names" - this will allow you to add the BFE account. 5. Give the Full privileges to the BFE account: Reboot. Disclaimer: Use Registry Editor at your own risk. My personal firewall got turned off somehow and won't turn back on. I went into "services" and tried to "start" it but got a message: "Windows could not start the McAfee Personal Firewall Service on Local Computer. Error 1075: the dependency service has been marked for deletion or does not exist." I tried McAfee's virtual technician but it said it couldn't fix the problem. I've looked at some of the other posts on this problem (it seems to be pretty common) but didn't see any clear or easy solutions (I'm too untechie to want to mess with the registry). Two further points:1. I've run full scans by both McAfee and Malawarebytes, and they say no viruses. But I assume it is still dangerous to run the computer without the firewall?2. I also can't turn on the Windows security center. Could this be related?Any help appreciated. Or should I just uninstall or reinstall? Thanks,Case 18367Views Tags: none (add) This content has been marked as final. Show 11 replies 1. Re: Personal Firewall Won't Turn on case59 Feb 25, 2012 7:39 PM (in response to case59) No help from McAfee and no help here. So I uninstalled McAfee and bought Kaspersky, which seems to be doing fine. I don't say this to be snarky. I've used McAfee for over ten years. But I don't want to go around without a firewall, and the unresponsiveness on what appears to be a common problem is troubling. Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 2.
