It's a simple script that queries the server for the number of private messages the user has received. The server responds with a single number, and the script updates the indicator and sets a timeout for five seconds

to query again. On rare occasion (usually when I go AFK for a while), I start getting the most bizarre HTTP status codes. On Chrome: "AJAX request failed to retrieve /ajax/network.php, HTTP status 0" On IE: "AJAX request failed to retrieve /ajax/network.php, HTTP status 12029" Neither of these codes are valid. What's going on here, and how can I stop it from happening? javascript ajax http-status-codes share|improve this question asked Sep 28 '11 at 23:33 Niet the Dark Absol 208k35240371 Are these errors repeatable, or do they happen completely at random? –Alex Sep 28 '11 at 23:37 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 6 down vote accepted That is an annoying aspect of AJAX. I find it's best to simply treat all non-200 statuses as an error. Really, you're not going to show your users any specific error messages relating to the actual result ("A problem has occurred"), so I'd simply not worry overly about inconsistent error conditions. jQuery normalizes some of the AJAX behavior, so you may also want to look into using that. By the way, error 0 in Chrome and 12029 in IE indicate connection problems; since that has noth
That No-one Else Talks About Category: Tech Handling AJAX errors is about more than just checking the readyState, status and statusText.
The W3 working draft for the XMLHttpRequest object states that when the readyState of an XMLHttpRequest is 3 or 4, then status and statusText error 12029 occurred while connecting to server must be available. These values can then be used to determine if the request was error 12029 sending request to server successful or not. By and large this is true, you will see a status of 200 when everything is OK and something likeGetlasterror 12029
404 when you make a mistake. What isn't specified however is what happens if the network connection goes down while the XMLHttpRequest is in flight or is down when the XMLHttpRequest is sent. The following table details the values http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7590859/ajax-returns-unusual-status-codes obtained or the behaviour observed in various browsers when an XMLHttpRequest fails due to a network failure. Browser Version OS readyState status statusText Firefox 1.5.0.6 WinXP SP2 4 exception thrown exception thrown Internet Explorer 6.0.2900 WinXP SP2 4 12029 Unknown Opera 9.01 WinXP SP2 4 0 empty Safari 2.0.4 OS X 10.4.6 4 undefined undefined Obviously this list is very far from complete. If you know the behaviour of other browsers or other browser versions, please let http://windyroad.com.au/2006/08/16/ajax-error-handling/ me know (via the comment section below) and I'll update the list accordingly. To run the test yourself, you can use the Event Driven AJAX Demonstration and Turn debugging on Click "Lighten Page" You should see "getEvents waiting.." in the debug window Sever your network connection (or if you are running the demo locally, terminate the web server) record the "readyState", "status" and "statusText" reported in the debug window. To create your own test: Create a page that sends and AJAX request when a user clicks a link or button Load the page Sever your network connection (or if you are running the test locally, terminate the web server) Click on the link or button to send the request record the values of "readyState", "status" and "statusText" or record if an exception is thrown trying to access the values. Admittedly, XMLHttpRequests rarely fail due to network issues, but it is nice to be able to detect when this occurs and handle it gracefully with your client side code. Probably the safest way to handle this type of error is to display a message in an appropriate place on your page. If your error message widget uses images you should try to pre-load these when the page loads (if possible), because the chances are that if the XMLHttpRequest failed, then an image request will fail too. 9 Years Ago This morning my HP Pavilion 7915 worked fine. Then I got some kind of update from Adobe and tried to run it. It said it was already there, and asked if I wanted to overwrite or put it elsewhre. I could do neither. Also, https://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/threads/64271/error-12029-a-connection-to-server-could-not-be-established I believe I may have had an Internet Explorer Update. The icon now looks different when the application shows on the taskbar. Then I tried logging onto internet, and Internet Explorer won't allow me to, saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the http://warnajith.blogspot.com/2010/08/status-code-returned-from-server-was.html webpage." I called my dsl server and they confirmed the modem is OK (it works well with my wireless laptop). On the Network Diagnostics page for XP it shows everything OK except under Connectivity it says "FTP (Passive): Error 12029 connecting error 12029 to ftp microsoft.com. A connection with the server could not be established." What does all this mean and what can I do?
