Error 13: The data is invalid. Article History Service Won’t start: Error 13: The data is invalid. On Windows 7 machines, sometimes a window service behaves unexpectedly and does not starts giving an error: “Error 13: The data is invalid” Firstly use the process monitoring tool to see any Access denied errors, on files folders and registry keys. Most of the cases arise due to some file/keys/folder restrictions that can be captured using the tool. Here is the resolution for few services : For IIS: Error in the event logs : The Windows Process Activation Service encountered an error trying to read configuration data from file ‘\\?\C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config’, line number ’0′. The error message is: ‘Configuration file is not well-formed XML’. The data field contains the error number. When any changes are made on web applications in IIS it creates a backup of the applicationHost.config file in c:\inetpub\history. Just copy the file from the history and put it int

Gunnar | IIS | 2 Share this postAfter restarting my error 13 invalid or unsupported executable format centos virtual development machine IIS was not able to start anymore. I checked out if there is something reported to Event Viewer and I found the following error message –Error 12: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/22358.service-wont-start-error-13-the-data-is-invalid.aspx The data is invalid. It turned out that during shutdown of my virtual machine IIS config file was ruined. Solution to my problem was very simple. IIS configuration is in file c:\windows\system32\inetsrv\applicationHost.config. In my case this file was same by size as before but it was filled with null bytes. When changes are made to this file then previous version http://gunnarpeipman.com/2009/09/iis-wont-start-error-13-the-data-is-invalid/ is backed up to c:\inetpub\history\ directory. I copied last working configuration file from history directory to inetsrv directory and started www service. Luckily, everything works again. When running a query http://www.fastvue.co/tmgreporter/blog/how-to-solve-13-the-data-is-invalid-error-in-forefront-tmg in Forefront TMG Logs and Reports view, I found the error below: Failed Connection Attempt Log type: Web Proxy (Forward) Status: 13 The data is invalid. Rule: Source: Internal Destination: External Request: GET http:// Filter information: Req ID: 0fdbab91; Compression: client=No, server=Yes, compress rate=0% decompress rate=0% Protocol: http User: anonymous Cause This error occurs when the error 13 destination Web Server is using Chunked Encoding but it is not passing the correct TransferEnconding header. When researching about this problem I found a great post from my friend Yuri Diógenes that explains why this problem happens: According to RFC if a server is using chunked encoding it must set the Transfer-Encoding header to "chunked". In order to compress the content error 13 the we need to accumulate all the chucks and then compress. When it works, TMG knows that all that content is part of the same HTTP request since it says in the HTTP Response Header; therefore it waits for the entire content, compress and send it back to the client. On the failing server we receive the first answer that doesn’t say that the content is chucked and right after that we receive other chucks, since HTTP Compression is enabled it fails to reassemble all the content since it doesn’t know that they belong to the same content." - Yuri Diógenes at: http://blogs.technet.com/b/yuridiogenes/archive/2010/12/22/3292163.aspx Solution If possible, the best way to solve it is by asking the web site administrator to change the "TransferEncoding header" parameter on the web server to "chunked". See How to enable chunked transfer encoding with IIS. Workaround If you cannot wait for the website administrator to change this, you can workaround the problem by disabling HTTP Compression for the destination site. Disabling HTT
