Could not open key: UNKNOWN...' problem which is becoming prevalent in online forum postings. Please use this information at your own discretion. A Quick Overview When installing or un-installing http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_install-mso_other/error-1402-setup-cannot-open-the-registry-key/42f5ea53-c3a5-49e0-b5e5-0eca72659eed Microsoft Windows component technologies on Windows Vista/Seven/Win2K8-Server (or newer) you may encounter a message box similar to "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\C9AE13788D0B61F80AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\...", This long number is not an "address" as many believe but rather a registry parent container key name (as a GUID) and its child name (as a GUID). The last "\" character separates the two parent/child GUIDs. This is not related to Okino http://www.okino.com/conv/changing_windows_registry_permissions.htm software, but rather to components which are usually provided by Microsoft Corp. The following tutorial will outline our own personal experiences at Okino Computer Graphics of dealing with this problem. We have seen this problem posted in many forums but the simple solution we outline below which has not been properly documented as we have done so here. Windows Vista/Seven/2K8: How to fix 'Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN...' The error is generally caused by insufficient or incorrect permissions on the named registry keys, or parent container of such registry keys. For Okino, it occurred on multiple occasions after upgrading some of our machines from Windows 2K3 to 2K8 server or from XP to Windows 7, and then upgrading/re-installing Microsoft products or components (Visual Studio and MSXML4 in our case). It is generally a simple matter to fix, once you know how. We recommended that you back-up your computer or at least the registry before taking this action. Microsoft's built-in backup program allows for the "system state" to be selectively backed up. Or, you can ZIP up the "windows\system32\config" directory while running in a backup operating system (this is where the registry hive files are located). Yo

I had Office 2007 installed. https://forums.techguy.org/threads/solved-error-1402-while-installing-microsoft-office-2010-professional-plus.1087875/ I installed the Office 2010 Technical Preview earlier this year. When trying to remove Office 2010 Technical Preview, it asked me for the original CD. Didn't have it anymore. I tried to ‘manually' remove Office 2010. I failed… miserably. Now Office 2007 wasn't working either. The Office 2007 uninstall failed, too. Aaarrgghh. I ended up not being able to error 1402 use any Microsoft Office application. After following many ‘removal guides' like this one and that one, I ended up with the 1402 error while almost having finished the Office 2010 install: Error 1402. Solved: Error 1402 While Installing Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus Discussion in 'Business Applications' started by Galleherjazz, Feb 2, 2013. Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement Galleherjazz Thread Starter Joined: Sep 23, 2002 Messages: 381 I have spent at least six hours (probably longer) researching and attempting to install a recently purchased download version of Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus. I spent a good deal of time uninstalling (completely) a previous, nag-screened unregistered, copy of Office 2010. I used the Microsoft Cleanup Utility. I ran several programs to clean up after all this, including Crap Cleaner. Each time I go to install Office, I enter the key (#), and get the prompt saying that there is ERROR 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key. I have done at least a dozen things to resolve this issue, including doing a diagnostic boot, with only essential services and processes running; disabled the firewall and virus protection; read of various other remedies, none of which has worked. I have gone to regedit several time trying to change permissions of certain registry files. Some seem to change okay. Others will change, then when I click okay, the permissions resort back to what they were prior. Other things, like clicking certain boxes about inheritance, won't stick ticked. I find the whole permissions thing a nightmare. My head is spinning. Is there a tried-and-true remedy for fixing this issue? Another question: Does Microsoft provide free installation support for its Office products? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
