If so, try and have that service run under an account that has the appropriate Admin Rights. 0 Message Author Comment by:gsfc2007-07-13 I do not see any service running that is associated with Symantec, I looked for Norton and Symantec. 0 Message Author Comment by:gsfc2007-07-13 I also tried to install version 9.0 and got the exact same message. 0 LVL 19 Overall: Level

Quote #1 Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:22 pm I'm trying to fix my friends computer, but I keep running into problems. I ran ad-aware, which turned out over 900 pieces of spyware, and then went to download Microsoft Defender(Formerly Anti-Spyware), and as I was installing it, I got the error, "Error 1402. Could not access key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." and then something about permissions. I googled this, which turned up results about it being a MS Office issue, so I got rid of Office, and still ran into the problem. I also read that it could be a Norton problem, and since his subscription had expired. I went to un-install that and got the same registry key error.
