useful for solving the 'How to fix 'Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN...' problem which is becoming prevalent in online forum postings. Please use this information at your own discretion. A https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/838687 Quick Overview When installing or un-installing Microsoft Windows component technologies on Windows Vista/Seven/Win2K8-Server (or newer) you may encounter a message box similar to "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\C9AE13788D0B61F80AF18C3B9B1A1EE8\...", This long number is not an "address" as many believe but rather a registry parent container key name (as a GUID) and its child name (as a GUID). The last "\" character separates the http://www.okino.com/conv/changing_windows_registry_permissions.htm two parent/child GUIDs. This is not related to Okino software, but rather to components which are usually provided by Microsoft Corp. The following tutorial will outline our own personal experiences at Okino Computer Graphics of dealing with this problem. We have seen this problem posted in many forums but the simple solution we outline below which has not been properly documented as we have done so here. Windows Vista/Seven/2K8: How to fix 'Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN...' The error is generally caused by insufficient or incorrect permissions on the named registry keys, or parent container of such registry keys. For Okino, it occurred on multiple occasions after upgrading some of our machines from Windows 2K3 to 2K8 server or from XP to Windows 7, and then upgrading/re-installing Microsoft products or components (Visual Studio and MSXML4 in our case). It is generally a simple matter to fix, once you know how. We recommended that you back-up your computer or at least the registry before taking this action. Microsoft's built-in backup program allows for the "system state" to be selectively backed up. Or, you can ZIP up the "win
was one of the two problems I encountered recently during Office 2010 re-installation in Windows 7. This post will focus on the Install Error 1402 http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/fix-office-2010-install-error-1402-setup-cannot-open-registry-key/ where Office 2010 setup cannot open the registry key named Unknown/Component/[Random Numbers]. Fixing https://yuridejager.wordpress.com/2009/11/30/fix-office-2010-install-error-1402-setup-cannot-open-the-registry-key-unknowncomponents/ this problem requires a cup of coffee and patience. This error is only shown when registry keys do not have Administrator permission. But you are logged in as Administrator, right? As it happens some setup can mess up the registry permissions and Office 2010 installer is no exception. Entering the following line error 1402 in Command Prompt will fix the problem for most people, secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose but it didn’t work for me. If it doesn’t work for you as well, follow the second method below. Download SubInAcl, a command line tool from Microsoft that enables administrators to obtain security information about files, registry keys services, etc. It will install to Program Files folder, error 1402 setup copy SUBINACL.EXE file to /Windows/System 32 folder. Now create a new notepad and paste the following code in it; subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /setowner=administrators subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /setowner=administrators subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /setowner=administrators subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f cls Exit Rename the notepad to reset and change the extension to cmd, the complete name will become “reset.cmd” as shown in the screenshot below. Run this file as administrator. The process will now take several minutes, do NOT close the Window what may come. Once the process is complete, the command line window will automatically close and you can then install Office 2010 successfully. via Yuri’s Technology Blog & DSL Report Update: Mike in the comments below has shared a method that worked for him and many others, the method is as follows: I was able to get the install working with Win7 64 bit. When you get the error: “setup cannot open the registry key named” The key that follows is what you want to look for in the registry. Once you find the key (mine was in hklm\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components), you will notice that

I had Office 2007 installed. I installed the Office 2010 Technical Preview earlier this year. When trying to remove Office 2010 Technical Preview, it asked me for the original CD. Didn't have it anymore. I tried to ‘manually' remove Office 2010. I failed… miserably. Now Office 2007 wasn't working either. The Office 2007 uninstall failed, too. Aaarrgghh. I ended up not being able to use any Microsoft Office application. After following many ‘removal guides' like this one and that one, I ended up with the 1402 error while almost having finished the Office 2010 install: Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key: UNKNOWN\Components\
