I'm running this existing distro (Ubuntu) from /dev/sdb with a new OS, Gentoo, installed on /dev/sda. I'm glad I took the trouble of setting these up on different disks because I can't boot into the new OS. All I get is grub error 15 "File not found". It also gives the UUID which I have verified is correct: sudo blkid /dev/sda1: LABEL="boot" UUID="b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5" TYPE="ext2" /dev/sda2: UUID="fc34999a-e85d-4c7b-8775-30510eb4c396" TYPE="swap" /dev/sda3: LABEL="main" UUID="65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd" TYPE="ext4" The menu.lst (on /dev/sdb) for the new OS is title Gentoo Linux 3.10.7-r1 uuid b891774a-0b2d-4ab4-bcfa-23a11a97cae5 #root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd I also tried kernel /boot/kernel-3.10.7-gentoo root=UUID=65a90a0d-a651-4215-8552-0c1859ab61dd but since the UUID goes directly to the boot partition I think this is wrong. The kernel should be correct; if I mount dev/sda1 and ls I see grub kernel-3.10.7-gentoo Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It might be very basic; I've only been using Linux for a few years

Windows 7: Grub boot error 15, file not found Page 1 of 2 1 2 > 23 Jul 2012 #1 orion64 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 2 posts Grub boot error 15, file not found I just recently returned from a trip out of town and found when I tried to boot my computer I had a Grub boot error 15, file not found. I've never heard of grub4dos before I began trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer and found that it is used for dual booting. I run windows 7 ultimate x64 and have never dual booted my machine. While my laptop itself is not password protected, I do require a password to get into windows. My question is can someone get around the required password to install grub4dos, install linux, then copy my hard-drive, leaving it useless when they're done? If not, is there some other way, a virus or trojan, that could cause windows to fail and revert to grub? I did remove my hard-drive, put it into an external case and try to look at it on another computer. In the disk manager it shows that it's healthy, has 465gb avail and the format is RAW. I really hope that someone out there can tell me how to recover my data and that the problem is something other than some individual hacking my computer. Thanks. Windows doesn't use Grub, so there's no way it just showed up unless someone installed it. Installing a Linux distro doesn't require your Windows password - they just boot from a CD and install the distro, which includes the Grub bootloader. They can also use a Linux LiveCD to access the entire Windows partition and get pretty much whatever they want from it. Do you have your Windows 7 installation DVD?
