The error gives you a message "Error 15: File not found!" simply because the file grub wants is not there. why? because grub is looking into a wrong device. You need to make changes to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to fix the problem so that grub looks into the correct device but first find out where is your root partition.Boot from a live CD -> open terminal . $ sudo fdisk -l | grep -i linux This will list your swap and root devices. In our example here /dev/hda5 1276 1397 979902 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda6 1398 2550 9261441 83 Linux Swap :: /dev/hda5 and Linux root :: /dev/hda6 /dev/hda6 is your root device. /dev/hda6 is written as (hd0,5) in grub. Make sure you understand this if it’s /dev/hda1 in your system then you ‘ll use (hd0,0). It’s always one digit less in (hdX,Y) Open your menu.lst file and check /dev/hda6 and (hd0,5) is the root device in the file and not any other device. This is the main reason for error 15. Here in our example root is /dev/hda6 so the /boot/grub/menu.ls

I run unetbootin on Ubuntu 7.10(gutsy) which is https://stringofthoughts.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/grub-error-15-debianubuntu/ my current Linux version and I choose the diskimage I've downloaded and placed into /boot/ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso And I choose to boot from the hard disk. The software versions are: unetbootin 377 Grub 0.97 After I've rebooted all options appear on the grub menu, I choose unetbootin and I get the error message 'error 15 file not found'. At the bottom of this text is the relevant part of my http://reboot.pro/topic/9762-error-15-file-not-found/ menu.lst(I can boot fine into all the systems, only when choosing the unetbootin do I get the error message 'error 15 file not found'). I've also noticed that in the /boot directory there are neither /boot/ubnkern nor /boot/ubninit which are two files referenced in the menu.lst. The only unetbootin related files in /boot are ubnfilel.txt and ubnpathl.txt which are both empty files. Thanks for any help. title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=
as it goes. I just installed Fedora 11 on a Drive that I had recently ran Ubuntu 9.04. I did re-partition and format the drive. I am also running Win http://linux.bigresource.com/Fedora-Installation-Error-15-File-Not-Found-at-first-re-boot-zCelVpm5U.html XP Pro on another drive, and can boot from either. The computer is older, http://linux.bigresource.com/SUSE-Novell-grub-boot-loader-file-not-found-error-15-SZYRWzL31.html but all the hardware seemed to work fine with Ubuntu and altough I had to format the install drive a couple times the installation seemed to go ok. on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.
