The error gives you a message "Error 15: File not found!" simply because the file grub wants is not there. why? because grub is looking into a wrong device. You need to make changes to your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to fix the problem so that grub looks into the correct device but first find out where is your root partition.Boot from a live CD -> open terminal . $ sudo fdisk -l | grep -i linux This will list your swap and root devices. In our example here /dev/hda5 1276 1397 979902 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/hda6 1398 2550 9261441 83 Linux Swap :: /dev/hda5 and Linux root :: /dev/hda6 /dev/hda6 is your root device. /dev/hda6 is written as (hd0,5) in grub. Make sure you understand this if it’s /dev/hda1 in your system then you ‘ll use (hd0,0). It’s always one digit less in (hdX,Y) Open your menu.lst file and check /dev/hda6 and (hd0,5) is the root device in the file and not any other device. This is the main reason for error 15. Here in our example root is /dev/hda6 so the /boot/grub/menu.lst should look like this title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6

The system has three drives. Multiboot is configured with Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu - all on the first drive. I had a lot of unpartitioned space left on the drive and was reserving it for adding other OSes and for storing files there in the future. One day I http://askubuntu.com/questions/119597/grub-rescue-error-unknown-filesystem went ahead and downloaded Partition Wizard and created a logical NTFS partition from within Windows 7, still some unpartitioned space left over. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted the computer a few days later. Now I'm getting: error: unknown filesystem. grub rescue> First of all I was surprised not to find any kind of help command, by trying: help, ?, man, --help, -h, bash, cmd, etc. Now I'm stuck with non-bootable system. I have started researching the issue and finding that people usually recommend to boot to a Live CD and fix the issue from there. Is there a way to fix this issue from within grub rescue without the need for Live CD? UPDATE By following the steps from persist commands typed to grub rescue, I was able to boot to initramfs prompt. But not anywhere further than that. So far from reading the manual on grub rescue, I was able to see my drives and partitions using ls command. For the first hard drive I see the following: (hd0) (hd0,msdos6) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) I now know that (hd0,msdos6) contains Linux on it, since ls (hd0,msdos6)/ lists directories. Others will give "error: unknown filesystem." UPDATE 2 After the following commands I am now getting to the boot menu and c

Getting Boot-Repair 1st option : get a disk including Boot-Repair The easiest way to use Boot-Repair is to create a disk containing the tool (eg Boot-Repair-Disk, a disk starting Boot-Repair automatically), and boot on it.
