It displays a menu of different kernel choices and the first one (and 2nd which is recovery mode) always fails with this error. Been running it for a quite a while with no problems. 32bit Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-23-generic is giving me the problems Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-22-generic works fine but seems slow. Thought it might be a MBR type of error and ran Rescatux (like super grub disk) basically restored MBR and no change. Error first appeared when I was having trouble getting a thumb drive to load. plugged it in and out a number of times and it never mounted. upon reboot (to see if that would fix the mounting problem) it gave the error. Also don't recall if I rebooted after doing an upgrade where it requested a reboot. I'm trying to think of what might have caused it. I'm single booting off a laptop. so no dual boot reasons like most I found when googling. Searched here and googled with no luck. Let me know what else you need to help me. Thanks! I also got the same error during rebooting normally, after I've resumed from hibernation. This problem can be quite easily be fixed by using the "recovery" kernel provided in grub menu: the ReiserFS transaction logs then get replayed then. After having hibernated before, the system will even resume normally, but when it happens after a "normal" reboot, I get the recovery root prompt only (though "init 2" should work from there). Inconsistent Booting (Random ERROR 16: Inconsistent File Structure) Started by jazzman22 , Jul 14 2008 04:23 PM Please log in to reply 14 replies to this topic #1 jazzman22 jazzman22 Members 7 posts Posted 14 July 2008 - 04:23 PM I'm a gadget nerd and I've got a number of small embedded devices that run XP Embedded and I was hoping to make maintenance on them a bit easier. I made a little mini-linux that is capable of doing emergency recovery work and backing up the device to a remote server. The mini linux is basically a kernel (2.6.16) and an initrd ramdisk (ext2 filesystem image that is gzip compressed...). I tried using grldr to give me the option of booting into the mini linux from the ntldr boot.ini file and it seems to work, but it's very inconsistent. It will boot into the mini-linux ok, but occasionally it will just hang with a kernel panic stating the initrd ramdisk image is corrupt (err=1 or err=2... both report checksum issues with the initrd file). So I tried uncompressing the ramdisk image to see what would happen. Now I occasionally get ERROR 16: Inconsistent File Structure when I try and load the kernel from GRLDR. I'm sure the initrd and kernel files are file, because if I then copy them to a USB stick with syslinux it boots fine. If I use the kernel and initrd image to PXE boot a device it works fine. For some reason I get inconsistent behavior with GRLDR, and I can only assume it has to do with reading the data from an NTFS partition. I can't repartition the devices and so I don't really have any other method of booting into the mini-linux (I want the mini-linux ON the device, not on a usb stick).
